Since “Counting Watches” wasn’t reliably keeping me asleep anymore, we decided to try another approach, and visited the local Sleep Emporium (not a real name) and talked to Nathan (real name).
After discussion and a few test stretches on mattresses, I was literally falling asleep on the showroom TempurPedic bed, which happened to be on a Memorial Day sale.
We came out with a receipt for a bed one step down from the top-of-the-line, hoping to get most of the features without the last few, highest margin bells & whistles (this works with cars).
Then we went home and sadly contemplated the upheaval that would result in our home’s multiple bedrooms. Move this? Discard that? Put another bed in the guest room? Move a bed to my office / apartment?
In any case it meant clearing space for the new bed. Then scaring away hordes of “dust bunnies” that had grown since we last moved the bed a decade ago.
SHE: cleaning the floor & washing the walls, laundry, etc.
ME: Hide all the watches, throw extra stuff in the closets, close all non-essential doors, air freshener, yada yada.
Nothing more invasive than strangers coming to the master bedroom!
The installers showed up this morning at 9 am sharp. Ding Dong!
Bursting with energy, they hustled giant boxes out of the truck, into the driveway, cut straps, tore open boxes and schlepped the goods into the room.
A quick setup (no testing) and “Slam, Bam, Please Sign Here. This is the user manual & the remote. Good luck, bye bye” and off to the next house…
Leaving us stunned and curious to learn what we had actually purchased, for the price of a Grand Seiko Spring Drive, SS on bracelet.
I won't bore you with the TempurPedic cooling fabric, breathing surface, foam technology, etc. The fun is in the frame underneath:
Obligatory remote (also available, of course, as an App on phone!)
shows the major functions of movement up/down, vibrations, etc. Everything and more that you need to get a good night’s sleep.
We slightly regretted passing on the Bluetooth “vibration to your favorite tunes” function, but we were happy to have convenient USB (both kinds) charging ports on each side of the bed.
The magic, so they say, is that 2 hours after you go to bed, it begins to listen for snoring, and if sensed, it will do some gentle vibrations or lift your head a bit to minimize it.
(I guess the 2 hours are scientifically proven to be the “most active” times when the microphone should NOT be listening… must check the user manual).
Using the remote or app you can raise head, raise feet, support small of your back (lumbar), vibrate top & bottom & center, and assume a Zero-G Astronaut position!
Q: Will my Accutron Spaceview watch work in Zero-G on a NASA-developed foam core mattress? Seems appropriate to check & confirm … ZZZZ… do you suppose they are available on a train?
