Yesterday, I was just about to leave the university and walked to the parking lot, when I heard a strange engine noise from above, growing louder quickly. Upon looking up, I held my breath, since what I saw, passing fast and low over our university buildings, was she:

I had read about Red Bull's owner Didi Mateschitz adding another classic plane to his collection, but the P-38 "Lightning" is something special indeed! AFAIK, not more than two or three are still flying worldwide, and now one of them is here!!
The sight was so great, that I started to jump and wave my arms, shouting "Yeah, baby!! " - much to the astonishment of some of my students passing by. I will have difficulties restoring my full authority, I fear .... but it was worth it!!!
The P-38 was developed by Lockheed and a large model of . . .

. . . it is on display at the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank. I had a similar experience several years ago when I heard a rumbling noise and looked up to see a Heinkel 111 flying overhead . . . the local airport has an annual vintage aircraft event, and I was lucky enough to see the Heinkel flying at low altitude as I was out for an afternoon stroll . . . cordially, Art
... under the Franco regime for several years even after World War II. They did not have the original German engines, I think they were powered by Hispano-Suiza engines. there "finest hour" these planes had in the movie "Battle of Britain".
Somewhen last year, my better half asked me to come to the dog training area, to take some pictures of her training our two little guys. I did as instructed:
But then, I heard that engine noise from a distance: not that light humming sound typical for the small engines, powering Cessnas and Beechcrafts, and not the loud sound of the Turboprop liners, with the faint whistle of their turbines, but a deep growl, dangerous, very dangerous ....
I am a good husband, and without a moment's hesitation obey the orders given to me by my wife. But I am also a man, and men have a reactive mechanism firmly implanted in our genetic code, that makes us helplessly staring at anything with a loud and deep engine sound; no chance, every man has to look up, when he hears something like that in the air.
So I saw something approaching lowly above the trees:
What a sight!!!!
Fortunately, the Red Bull planes collection is flown frequently, so the sight of a B-25 at houseroof height is not uncommon. More often we see the big DC-6 liner above the town, but you have to be lucky to catch the Corsair, or the Huey Cobra.
This thread for some reason reminded me of a twin two-seater that really stoked my interest when I was a kid: the Wing Derringer.
So I googled up some URLs that some of you may find interesting. In particular, there appears to be one offered for sale near San Francisco. Now I really wish I had taken the time to earn a pilot's license with twin engine rating. Oh well...
(On the other hand, there may be a reason why this almost 30 year old aircraft only has 266 TT)
IN fact, I carry with me a nice point-and-shoot most of the time ...

... but for the Lightning, I was far too slow. Therefore I had to add the Red Bull press pic. The Corsair was a different issue, since I was taking pictures of my wife training with the dogs, when she popped up between the trees.
