I know that AndrewD and some other Purists here are coffee geeks so let me show you the little work iv'e done this weekend:

Decided to upgrade my Rancilio Silvia with a PID (Proportionnal Integral and Derivative) to gain in temperature control (+ pre-infusion mode), but also got in a bottomless portafilter which helps analysing your barista skills ;-)

So far quite happy with the first tests!

It's mostly all automated for the top end like Jura.

Prefer it like that, Jura's are fine if you are superbusy and want better quality than Nespresso but semi-auto will give you more flexibility

Like high-end Hi-Fi, and particularly amplifiers, it's becoming all the rage to modify machines to improve temperature stability, set pump and boiler pressures more accurately, install custom restrictors to increase steam pressure (at least on E-61 machines that I am most familiar with), etc..

Do you feel there have been significant improvements in the coffee and, in particular, what aspects?

Loved the video, and it's endlessly fascinating to me how we all have our own styles to get the coffee to taste the way we like it. Have you attended any Barista Competitions? That's a lot of fun as well, and I always get ideas to try.

Great setup. Hope you get a lot of enjoyment from it. Thanks for showing us.

Indeed coffee world is quite a dark hole .... only started a year ago so still plenty to learn! haven't attended barista competition yet but might give it a go one day

As i also cleaned everything at the same time i took the oppportunity to re-adjusted the vario grinder ... so i might need more time to be perfectly happy with grinder setting before playing a bit more with temperature on the PID.
On that point do you guys know if there is kind of wiki page for perfect temperature per coffee? Currently @ 105 celsius which is ~95 celsius at brew head

... or the perfect amplifier, it varies depending on the coffee, the extraction time, and the flavours you are after. You might try turning down the temperature at the group head a little. My rule of thumb is 90 to 96C, so you may be extracting a little hot. But it's trial and error. Look at the Coffee Geeks website and you will find plenty of information.
