We were also in Florence,-- a place where I have spent much time-- but only for 1 day this summer. For day trips, I HIGHLY recommend going to Lucca. It is about 1 hour drive and it is a fabulous city, and much less tourist than Florence. I would also like to recommend a restaurant in Florence called Buca Lapi. We always include a diner there in our plans. Bistecca alla Forentina is the house (and regional specialty), paired with a nice local Brunello (http://www.bucalapi.com). Oh, and I also had the good fortunate to make a special purchase at the Panerai Boutique in Florence (housed in Panerai's original workshop), which I had planned months in advance (since the model I wanted was a little difficult for them to get, but fortunately, they got one 3 days before my arrival and held it in the safe for me).
