Glashütte Original

Next week is the 70th birthday of my father. I have been thinking to buy a new watch (he has many Rolex & one Breitling). I was thinking to buy something classic & elegant. My choices are Jaeger Le Coultre Master or IWC Portuguese, but I have found the Glashütte Senator Automatic which is a similar style. As you can imagine it's a very special present so I wonder if someone coudl help me with the decision. Thanks in advance. Carlos

If you want something really classic and elegant, have a look at JLC's Master Ultra Thin. It is a beautiful watch and the ratio between quality and price is just right. Furthermore, you can get it both in steel and in RG.

Perhaps you're drawn to the Senator Automatic due to its relaxed presentation of the passage of time, without a seconds hand. Possibly the high level of movement finishing is an attraction. The austere aesthetics are especially fitting for a gentleman . . . it's the sort of design that attracts people who have no desire to impress others.





Jaeger Le Coultre and IWC are both great manufacturers, and the model lines you mentioned are also suitable for the occasion. The best advice I can offer is to try the Senator Automatic on your own wrist to see if its unique qualities are transcendent. Look with your eyes, exercise your mind, and most of all, listen to your heart . . . your instincts will not fail you.

You are the salesman for GO. After your explanations I want to go out and buy a GO (and probably will one day).

The IWC is also a good choice, simple and elegant. As for a JLC, I would choose a Memovox model.

This says in an elegant way what I always tell others: I wear a nice watch for myself and not for anyone else. I know this is the GO forum but as an owner of both brands may I also humbly suggest this:

that sounds like a really tough choice.  i would vote go senator because it probably has a little more wrist presence than the mut without making a ruckus.  it would be a little heftier than the mut, and the plain indices are just ever so slightly more elegant in my opinion.  the portuguese seems like the odd one in this trio.  it's very beautiful but a little too loud compared to these two, and it look big in a way that the go wouldn't.  can i get away with saying that it's somewhat less elegant/dressy than the go and the mut?  i love the iwc, but it just lacks the panache that the other two have.  so i don't think it's quite in the same line up.

i don't own any of these, so you know that i have no direct experience.  but what a good son-in-law you are.  classy gift.

special for your father on the "reverse side"
and buy yourself a G O
