Panerai PAM 587 Marina Militare / PAM 662 Capuccino. Dials and hands comparison.
I love both dials, with a neat preference for the hands of the Marina Militare PAM 587.
But this PAM 662 is really charming.
On the other side, the Marina Militare is just magic.
Damn dilemma.

Having experienced the good old days (and the not so good), the 662 would be something like a nice contra piece to all that. I have a Panerista friend who sold all over time (127, 249, 372, etc) and bought the 662 to have some sort of Panerai memento. I thought it was a cool move for a disillusioned die hard who still wanted to have something from that past.
For me, if it was going to be my only Panerai, I’d go for the obvious choice, the 587. It has all the makings of a special piece. I came across one with a price way below list, had a deer in the headlights moment and totally missed out on a great opportunity to own one. Never say never though. A 1940 and a “regular” Radiomir case are still on my list.
That being said, what I like about the 662 is that it makes having that “fauxtina” look totally acceptable design-wise as it blends well with the dial color. It does not look forced although one could argue that the whole dial is “faux” in the first place.
But if I were to place a bet.. hahaha! You’d probably go for the 587 first.

I normally toss a coin in the air and buy.......BOTH!! LOLLL In this case, I have no use for the "cappuccino". Marina Militare in a Panerai is just...something else...for a chap like me

587 has always been a grail
... for me. Couldn’t find one and went for the 673. Like it, but still think about the 587 — a very simple and symmetrical, yet elegant, beauty.
Believe it or not...
between the two, I actually prefer the 673. Is less "chunky" than the 587 on the wrist (in MY opinion, of course)

I'm relatively new to Panerai, as you know. The 587 was the first new Panerai that really caught my eye. I love the dial and hands, as well as the symmetry of the case with the simple crown and no crown guard. But the 673 was available at the time so I went in that direction. I still have the watch and like it very much but always pined for the very similar, but slightly different 587.
Interestingly, you're not the first to mention that the 673's 1950 Luminor case may be a tiny bit more comfortable on the wrist than the 587's 1940 Radiomir case. I'm sure the differences are pretty subtle. But maybe there is a slight difference in fit and feel. I would guess both cases are equally bulky and chunky, certainly compared to an older 249 or 232 with Unitas movement, but even compared to a 47mm Radiomir like the 721. Since subsequently adding a 249 and 721 to my small Panerai collection, I've come to appreciate Panerais that are not the 587! As much as I like the 587 and 673, both are quite elegant in design and feel (e.g., gold hands) and when I feel the desire to wear a large Panerai, I often want something more casual and low key, which is why I wear the 249 or 721 more than the 673. Despite all of these considerations, the 587 is a knock-out and I'd love to feel that bulky 1940 Radiomir case on my wrist for the first time ;-)

The 587 is the first "revisitation"...
of the Vintage 6152/1 and as such is already worth owning. Not quite the superstar: 6154 (reproduced in the PAM622 Russian Paneristi) but a splendid transitional case none the less.

Not being able to explain the...feeling
I decided to "investigate" further. Also to answer a direct question from John. I've taken a couple of pictures which, as usual, are better than a 1000 words. The watch on the right is the 673 and you'll notice the subtle but obvious difference in the lugs shape between the two models:
And slightly thinner at the end....
that's why the 587 sits higher on the wrist and gives me the "chunky" feeling.

I had no idea that lug shapes and thicknesses were this different -- I had previously thought they were the same or very close.
