In the case of the 5218-202/As, the matching dials are the rarer (50) versus 96 non-matching. This one is pretty nice with complete documentation. A slightly belated Happy Birthday gift. Not an easy decision but the heart wants what it wants and I've been after this one for a while.

vintage Panerais are..only...the ones produced for the Italian Navy, before 1993. The 5812-202A belongs to the Pre-V era, which marks the beginning of the commercial "adventure" of Panerai. The Pre-V period (Pre sale of the watch division to the Vendome group, hence Pre-V) covers the production between 1993 and early 1997

produced on specific request by the German forces during the occupation of Italy.

It was thrown in as the watch was on its original Kodiak strap and I promptly took that one off. Not familiar with the maker but it is a very nice strap!

I'll never understand the appeal of "non matching". MM dial is amazing... very well done!
I think, at least for me...
The appeal is more the artifact and the interesting story rather than the esthetic. I'll admit the matching seems more harmonious.

apart from the Mamma Mia appeal, which makes the 202A THE Pre-V model to die for, also the dial conditions are superlative, The prestine, FAT matching indices are simply..spectacular. On the flip side of the coin, the dial of the 201A NM is a bit "worse for wear", which makes the "trade-up" even sweeter. IMO of course. Enjoy your new acquisition TOO MUCH

I hope you are well. I couldn’t tell if it was you first or Nico, either way it seems appropriate. This one is really nice and a pleasure to be the custodian. You’re right, the 201A was nice but this one is nicer. I have no choice but to enjoy it TOO MUCH indeed. Started with some homemade pasta and a nice Vermentino in the spirit of things Italian. Maybe some photos with the Alfa tomorrow.

Wow, my friend, WOW! Huge congratulations. I totally feel the pain of letting the 201 NM go, but as you said, some sacrifices are worth being made.
The 4 lines MM is one of the watches I regret having sold. I had a wonderful one and I will probably never forget it.
