Above all I find the power reserve of 10 days (in addition to the GMT function) really very practical (especially if you change several watches regularly).
But I have been always worried that there could be technical problems with the movement or PR indicator. At the very beginning there were some reports about technical issues (but I think it was about the 233 with the 8-day power reserve). What are your personal experiences? Best Thomas
The 10-days PR (and I LOVE the horizontal PR indicator), domed glass, sandwich dial, GMT-function (allowing you to set date backwards) are all the right reasons why I got the 270 My personal experience has been pretty great. Have owned it for more than a decade now (bought it in around 2009). Like you said, the PR indicator issue was for the 233 and only the earlier (i-series) if I remember correctly. Only issue I've had was that a screw magically came off within the movement (you'll be able to see in my history, it was within the last 12 months) and I wasn't too happy with how PAM charged me for it. I'd say that's the only negative I have with it and it's more to do with how Panerai handled it rather than the watch itself. I still smile in awe of its beauty (and functions) every time I put it on, 12-13 years later!
Wow! This is true love of an enthusiast! ๐๐๐

And that's the way it should be. Watches are made to be worn.
And you certainly made the right decision with your fantastic 270.
I personally have / had an... emotional problem with Panerai lately, because after some issues secretly reducing the quality and functionality of some movements, my trust has โฆ. suffered somewhat.
But I'm afraid I'm - nevertheless - in a "pre-purchase phase" again.
There is a head race between the 270 (which, as you know, unlike the 233 has an automatic movement) and the 670. Here I like the functionality and, despite the complexity, the overall conception of the dial, too (although the equation of time might be a rather โฆ. useless feature for me in daily life).
Thank you for your very informative response. I appreciate this (and your heartfelt enthusiasm) very much!
I have had a love-hate relationship with Panerai - obviously started with love (or lust), at the right time as with the 233/270 era was when they began venturing into "in-house" movement. Back then, in terms of functionality, 8/10 days PR with a unique horizontal indicator (I just love watching the indicator go up/down through the week), quick set GMT-function that allows you to set dates backwards (so you don't ever have to worry about adjusting date at 9pm-3am) and second reset were (and arguably still) ahead of its competitors. Add in the sandwich dial + domed glass and it was just ticking the right boxes for me. I did have to struggle between the 270 or a 233 dot dial - but in the end the less busy-looking PR indicator on the 270 won it for me. Again, also totally understand where they screwed up. The movement debacle aside, my biggest bone to pick with them is how they totally flooded the market with too many models each year and killed their own brand; or how they killed the PAM 373 with the PAM 425 lol... perhaps it was the right strategy for their P&L, I didn't bother to look, but it did kill the passion for many. It's impossible to please everyone, I guess... but I digress Anyway - although you didn't ask for the advice but here it is anyway lol: in the end, I would still buy with my heart (with a bit of sanity check). If it makes me smile every time I look at it still, then why not, regardless of what's happening at their HQ. In terms of sanity check, for as long as Richmont is still around and still own the brand, I don't have to worry about not being able to service it. Good luck with your search, hope you'll end up with the choice that makes you happy!
In one respect we are particularly similar: Like you I always buy with my heart. This is my only valid credo and "collector concept". 100% love or I pass.
This was in South Lantau - not a usual spot for junks, but it's close to us given we live on the island. Sai Kung will always be my #1 choice for boating if it weren't for the trek/traffic!
