because it seems the majority of Panerai fans that post online prefer 44mm or larger. But just because of this doesn't mean you shouldn't get the PAM241. My 1st Panerai was a 40mm Luminor Chronograph, and then I ventured into the larger sized Panerai's afterwards.
The main thing is to get what you like as well as whatever fits on your wrist comfortably. Please keep us updated if you decide to get the PAM241!

Personally,
I feel the trend for big watches (44mm and more) might gradually make way for slightly modest sizes (42 - 40mm). There is nothing wrong with the 40mm Luminors. I feel that at 40 or 42mm, they are less rugged and fit under the cuff better.
The thing you must consider is that if you would enjoy the power reserve indicator on the dial. Having liked it since I started out with Panerai, I've gotten tired of it over the years, and much prefer the simple historic dials (bases and marinas). Else, I would opt for the chronos -- the PRs doesn't do it for me anymore.
Best of luck on your hunt. I am sure it won't be your last
