If I was starting again I would start with the 000 or the 005. Both represent what Panerai is all about. They also have the classic logo and look good with numerous straps.

First the 312 is a great looking piece. Cost would be around $7,000. It is a contemporary model
For most collectors like myself and let me qualify this by saying I have 11 Panerai's, the historic look is prefered by most, but not all. The 000 costs around $3800 and the 005 around $4200. If you are starting out this price level alows you some leeway to Put Away the original strap and buy 1 or 2 others with the money you save.
Final result you enjoy the first Panerai and you get to go crazy with trying fiqure out a strap. Their are so many that you will learn quickly.
Just my two cents!
you like the most and can afford. Panerai models are so many, so diverse and yet so similar, in their essence. Which one do YOU like most?
Having said that, my first Panerai was a 249 California

I like the Slytech more, though this one's not to be sneezed at. When I grow up (or rich) I'll buy myself one.....hahahaha

Which year did you make your first purchase? Quite unusual for a first piece Panerai IMO...I bet most would op for a Luminor. Good foresight
Best to you my friend.

!
they are all great starters...imho...haha..
When i first decided to get a PAM, I had my eyes set on the PAM312...and I went to a referenced dealer(non-AD) who I knew had a new PAM312 at a reasonable price, ready to buy it...but when I was browsing their collection, I saw a used (but in good condition) PAM222..and it was love at first sight, not sure why... just looked right when it was sitting on my wrist.. I told them to ring up the bill and now I own a PAM222...the end..no regrets
I would have gone for
1) 196
2) 233
3) 317...slurp
cheers
