I have a question for you regarding the hands, is that hand original or a replacement brass hands? I've never seen any 3646 California dial with gold colored hands....

The most known hands for the California are the same hands as the 3646 PANERAI Radiomir, but the brass hands as on this watch were also correct on the later Rolex California version.

It seems like there are endless variation of dial and hands combination on vintage Panerai...

And I thought the new white gold Radiomir California has the wrong hand combination...

In the case of a 3646 California, many refer to it as a PANERAI piece, but nothing shows anything else than it being a pure and simply Rolex watch.

Regarding the hands, they aren't many hands configurations for any of the Rolex/Panerai models: 2533, 3646, 6152s 6154,  (most supplied to PANERAI, some very few were issued by Rolex (well that what till know is being known, seen and observed).

Hands configurations: 1 set for the 3646 Radiomir, 2 sets for the 3646 California, 2 sets for the 6152, 2 sets for the 6152-1, (I think) only 1 set for the 6154

Some of the Panerai Vintage pieces are showing us other configurations.  This is because and foremost due to the shortage of spare parts, as for those pieces used during and post WWII, repairers, watchmakers etc. fixed these watches with what would work thus explaining why some strange configurations.

With Panerai always remember that till very recently it was only a military secret.

So basically a Vintage Panerai is no different than a Rolex watch... As it is basically made by Rolex to Panerai's specification... And I totally aware and understood that so many different combination of hands and even crowns is caused by the shortage of parts... That's why we see so many strange combination...

What I'd like to know more is , if the 1 set hands configuration for the 3646 Radiomir are the long blue hands (just like the one on PAM249) ?

PANERAI RADIOMIR 3646, the watch-case and movement was produced by Rolex, the dial was produced and fitted by PANERAI
PANERAI 6152, the watch-case and movement was produced by Rolex according to PANERAI requirements, the dial was produced and fitted PANERAI
PANERAI 6152-1 the watch-case and movement was produced by Rolex, the dial & the protecting crown device was produced and fitted by PANERAI
PANERAI 6154 the watch-case and movement was produced by Rolex, the dial was produced and fitted by PANERAI
2/56, produced by PANERAI (Angelus SF240)

* Rolex movement Cal. 618 17 jewels, and an earlier version with 15 jewels (no shock protection)
*Some of the above models were issued with an Angelus SF240 movement fitted by PANERAI

On the 2533 and the 3646, the dial came from Rolex...

Can you tell us when, according to you, the 2533 came, I mean, which year?

According to Panerai, it came in 1937, but I thought it was before the 3646, so, somewhere in 1935...

The Rolex/PANERAI 3646 was introduced late 1937 replacing the Rolex 2533 which was inefficient under-water (lately (finally) I saw many corresponding letters between Rolex and Panerai refering this issue (water-resistance) for all 2533 that were going back and forth from Panerai to Rolex to Panerai. Part of the those documents included import-export documentation of approx. 16 x 2533 pieces).  Those documents are clearly dated and stamped by many legal administrations of both countries.

And I was also convinced there were much less than 16 2533.
