Officine Panerai

Just landed today, and no, I don't foresee it coming off my wrist anytime in the near future:



First impressions? Well, it's large. Really large. Mind you, I'm no stranger to big watches, what with an IWC Top Gun Doppel, Sinn U1000 S and Rolex DSSD among others currently lurking in my watch box. Seriously, 47mm only just begins to tell the tale with this elegant beast; my wrist clocks in at almost 7.5" and yet there's still a bit of overhang at the lugs.

Otherwise, it's gorgeous. Disgustingly so, actually. Between the etched dial, gold hands, faded lume, hybrid Radiomir/1950 Luminor case (an homage to the 6152, I believe), plexiglas crystal and 3-Day in-house manual-wind movement, this thing works on almost every conceivable level for a Panerai. Also, I really dig the OEM straps. Yes, I have a more than a few custom jobs in-bound, but right out of the box this sucker is good to go.

Bottom line: if you've got the wrist for it, this is the one Panerai to rule them all.

Base is ace.

But seriously, as different as the TTR US and 372 are from an aesthetic perspective, at the end of the day they're both resolutely retro pieces. Heck, between them and my DSA, you might say that 2011 was the year of the neo-vintage for this particularly complex WIS. Even the AP Diver, which I picked up back in March, sorts fits in with the theme, what with it's 70s, Genta-inspired design and all.

Most likely 2012 will be a relatively sedate year for me from an acquisition standpoint, but then I seem to recall saying that that about 2011 as well...

I love the piece to death but I just can't wear it comfortable or non-comical with my 6.5" wrist...

Yeah, this sucker does wear large. True, a lot of it boils down to attitude, but with anything less than 7" wrists you're going to look like you snuck into your daddy's watch box.

Even so, I'd probably still wear it, it's that good looking.

I wore it several times, and I felt like 14 years back, when I put a Panerai on my wrist, for the very first time.

Same strong feeling and love with the 372 which I tried several times.

Strong love but deep psychological weakness, though.
