Time for a change

Gents, I currently have a PAM 88 which I have had for around 3 years and use it as my every day watch. Still get many admiring glances from both watch aficionados and not.

Have decided to update and have been looking at chronographs. The obvious is the rolex daytona (but now too common), but have also been looking at the AP Royal Oak Chronograph (a beautiful watch, but very expensive for my wallet).

Having always been a Panerai man, would really like to stay with the brand. Interested to hear your views on what in the current line-up can give me that 'chrono' look, but also the traditional paneria feel. This will still be my everyday watch and will be worn both for dress and casual.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Maybe this time try a Panerai Radiomir instead of a Luminor this time to mix it up?

There's a white dialed version PAM518, but that is in platinum so it won't be in your targeted budget.

Otherwise, I think you may like the PAM246 (pictured below)

But not in the current production. The Pam 300 is top gorgeous, but waaay too big!

Thanks for the advice. Had never really thought of a radiomar before - will need to have a look.

Anthony of the two you suggested, what sort of budget and availability via a boutique?

Of the 2, I don't think you can buy either at a Panerai Boutique

The PAM520 is a new watch from SIHH 2014, so I don't think they've made their way to the stores yet.  But should be soon IMO.

And the PAM246 was released several years ago, so I doubt there are any left there since, if I remember correctly, it was a limited edition of 300 or 500 pieces.  You can probably find one if you search on google though.  Retail was approximately $16k.  You can try calling the Panerai Boutiques to see if they happen to still have one left.  The PAM246 was never a "hot" piece, so maybe there's still a chance to get one through them.

I second the pre-Vendome Mare Nostrum. In Navy speak, it was a "plank owner" of the consumer Panerai brand. Having been there at the launch in '93, it didn't survive long into the Richemont era, but what a cool looking piece it was.

Assuming you're not planning to use it as a dive watch, it's an all-purpose fun watch. The original chrono, it's also one of the few Panerais that is recognizable as a different animal from across the a room. The MN is nothing like its siblings Luminor and Radiomir.  It has a great story as the descendant of a wartime prototype, and the blue dial is a cool touch.

Plus, they're not making any more of these... a no loss investment if you decide to try something else. But I couldn't imagine why you would be infatuated with it.
