IWC

Great shots of a lovely watch. And a special one, too, with its combination of a perpetual calendar / Rattrapante.

Thanks a lot, mon ami!

As you might remember I have regretted selling my 3750 (1st generation with a 39mm case in WG, white dial, and the "simple chronograph function) for about almost two decades.

A few years later I made up my mind to correct my mistake. And it took me 16 years to find this gem. Resting in NOS condition  (new, never worn, with all papers) in a safe for 15 years, either...

Thomas

That's an incredible find, after all these years, and if my memory serves me well, limited to 250 pieces!

An impressive piece Thomas, thanks for sharing this remarkable IWC! Looking spectacular on the wrist! ;-)

Thank you so much, dear Fabrizio!

I have to say that this 3754 with its beautiful blue dial is in the flesh much nicer than on the pics that can be seen on the Internet.
I almost fell from my seat when I removed the hundreds of protective covers from the watch almost 1 year ago.
Then I REALLY realized how much I have missed my first generation Da Vinci in WG.
But I have to confess the legibility and the size are now much better with this second generation (case size 41,5 mm instead of 39 mm). No, that's an understatement, the readability and feeling on the wrist are really excellent! And it has - for me - a perfect mix of functions (Perpetual Calendar + Chrono Rattrapante).
The watch works perfectly so far. Unbelievable +/- 0,00 seconds per day. Even after starting it after a 15 year sleep (it was never worn and rested in a safe). When I wentto my AD immediately after the purchse to check everythingm, according to the watchmakers (two! checked the watch in parallel) the lubricants and the amplitude were "amazingly perfect".
Since then I wear it regularly and it never stopped to work perfectly.

I’ve always found that this one caught my eye, a beautiful watch. Blue before blue was on trend too.

Thank you, dear Jay!

 By: MTR : December 17th, 2021-13:33
Yes, this dial was made in blue, when almost nobody was searching for a blue a dial and it was for sure not a trend like today.

It is a stunning timepiece, including the lugs 😀 with a wonderful complication.

Hahahahahaha, dear Nacelle!

 By: MTR : December 17th, 2021-15:33
Yessss, INCLUDING the LUGS‼️‼️‼️

🙏😊

P.S.: Due to this movable lugs the watch sits better on the wrist than most of the watches I know.

Phenomenal watch

Both design and complication

Yes, design AND function

Classic and … timeless, too.

Thank you for your warm comment, dear Hussam

I also love the three-dimensionality of this watch, which in some positions looks like a sculpture…

More gorgeous photos of this beauty! 😍😍

 By: Lankysudanese : December 17th, 2021-15:20
I always admired this timepiece for the historical significance. Little did I know that the case, dial and lugs were super-photogenic.
Congrats again
Hussam

Three further photos are still possible 😉

 By: MTR : December 18th, 2021-16:41
The photos were taken a year ago when this gem arrived.

And yes, this watch is very photogenic.

All photos were made with an iPhone 11 without talent to speak of. LOL

All the best my friend
Thomas

The talent started when you picked the timepiece (amongst all the other hype)…

I have to say, I have had really good teachers and role models here over a long period of time.

In the meantime I have developed my very own taste, which often does not go hand in hand with the watches that many investment oriented collectors chase after.

For me it's a lot more fun if you follow your own passion and stay open and curious about new things.

That has meanwhile also led me to only buy what I really love 100% and of which I am 100% convinced, no matter what others say.
On the other hand, it also means that I radically part with watches when I notice that I feel lukewarm about them. So I also gave some “high collectible” watches away no matter which brand it was (including - oh my gosh!!!! 😊 - Patek, Rolex, JLC and others).

All the best
Thomas

That’s been my approach so far, and I hope to continue to do so.

 By: Lankysudanese : December 20th, 2021-08:21
Most of us entered this passion due to strong emotional connections with mechanical horology. A highly-collectible watch that leaves me cold has no room in my wrist.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Hussam

I really like your approach, Hussam.

 By: MTR : December 20th, 2021-17:19
It's really individual and unique.

Whether it is a Harbring2 with a very special dial or a Longines with a creamy dial or a beautiful Anordain, a nice AP RO, a limited Kudoke 2 or a Rolex Batman.

You often (and like me not always) walk off the beaten paths. What I appreciate, too!

Even if this strategy might lead to an unusual range in my collection. 😎

Nuanced collectors such as yourself, EdTonkin, Bill, Holdenchamp, Aperna, Nico, Holdenchamp, ArmisE, Yacomino  (to name a few) have all played a major role in shaping my personal ‘taste’ in watches.

Your two examples are perfect for how each new watch should compliment the ones that are already in the collection, as opposed to replicating what is already there. Much to my wive’s chagrin, she sees no trend, and I smile and tell her that that is on purpose Bc if a fire destroys my entire collection except for what I’d strapped on my wrist, that watch better be unique and able to “hold its own” in one way or another.

Long ramble, but the market price for my collection is minuscule compared to the tremendous joy and ‘value’ that I extract from my eclectic collection. And it seems like several of purists like it that way

Stay well my friend

P.S: that dreamy lagoon-blue Anordain has given me the Rolex treatment, as I’m now legions and legions deep in a supposed waitlist 👎🏿

Hussam

Dear Hussam,

 By: MTR : December 29th, 2021-00:57
I have been rather busy the last days so I am able to answer your very nice post just now.

“Tremendous joy and ‘value’ that you extract…”. You can’t express it better what passion in our beloved hobby means. And this (your) joy comes from an intrinsic motivation. It comes from deep within you and is completely independent from what others say.

And yes. It takes time to evolve your taste. I am also very thankful that I found some very passionated and knowing collectors (and friends!) here that helped me to learn what I really love and like when it comes to watches.

It’s all about your very personal wishes, goals in life and beliefs.

All the best
Thomas

P.S.: Regarding waiting list(s): I try to avoid them wherever possible. Even if the price is to give up a certain target. 😁

No safe queen

 By: LiftAngle51 : December 17th, 2021-21:17
Having the perfect watch, most of us are so careful, our grail become a safe queen.
You just wear your favorite watch.

Seeing your D’avinci i compare it to a Cartier Pasha.
Very different, but i think the lugs do it.

Thanks for your comment, Weems@8!

 By: MTR : December 18th, 2021-12:24
I have to admit, not a single one of my watches is a safe Queen.

Watches are built to be used (from a MR to a PC to a Tourbillon).
For me there is nothing more sad than a beautiful watch that has been built with a lot of passion and that, wrapped in plastic and sealed, vegetates in a safe.

Cheers
Thomas

Lovely post to read on a Saturday morning

Haven't logged in for awhile and it was a joy to see such lovely photos of an uncommon piece. The design stands out on its own for sure. And with the complications, It's a complete piece Thomas.

Thank you for your very kind words, dear traineract!

 By: MTR : December 18th, 2021-12:20
And what I like so much is that you really get a lot of watch for your money. And a piece that is really steeped in history, has changed the world of watches so that you carry history on your wrist.
For me, collecting watches is not a question of investment strategies and greed, but rather of passion and heart and soul. And this gem perfectly fulfills these parameters for me.

All the best
Thomas

Definitely with you on my collecting perspective too Thomas!

 By: traineract : December 19th, 2021-02:22
And that's also what I love the Purists community and their passion for collecting. Always a joy to find good posts and have good discussions!

Thanks again. So we have the same perspective. 😊

 By: MTR : December 20th, 2021-00:22
And yes, it is definitely more satisfying and more fun when you go through the "world of watches" with open eyes and only acquire what you really like 100%.
Regardless of what others say. Regardless of whether it is “highly collectible” (= a good financial investment) or not.
Regardless of whether it is with or against the current trend.

Because at the end of the day the special gem is just on your own wrist. And the joy comes from feeling it and looking at it and not from what others think about it.

🥂😊
