About the SIHH collection, I have to confess that I have some troubles with the complicated Ingenieurs. The PC Digital is clearly a no-go for me. But on the other hand, I appreciate the Automatic and the Dual Time. And the new Portuguese Automatic is a good surprise for me.

Thanks!

Armchair shopping experience

 By: Spellbound : September 1st, 2013-11:43
Thanks as always. Your boutique visits are some of my favourite posts.  They take me to places far away, and distant in my memory. An excellent armchair shopping experience.
I must say, I do like the boutique edition Portofino Chronograph. One of a huge number of reasons to visit Rome soon.
Next year apparently is the Year of the Aquatimer. Could be interesting.....

Thanks Dean for your nice words!

A little bird told me that JLC would open its boutique on the same area at the end of the year. I know where... wink

My reflections

 By: heartbreaker : September 1st, 2013-13:12
As always, a pleasant article and beautiful, very bright pictures from F.X. Thank you!

IWC is one of my dearest brand, mostly because I closely follow it from the very beginning of my passion for watches; to be more precise, those were the years of the mithical Da Vinci automatic chronograph with perpetual calendar. In recent years, being a PuristSPro fellow, I learned to appreciate their boutiques, as discussion topic of a lot of articles and reports: for me they are the most beautiful, in the world of horology.

That being said, you can imagine how I was impatient to visit the first boutique opened in my country. When, in May, I was in Rome, I went directly to Piazza di Spagna 28, to see the shop in the flesh. Unfortunately, I was late for another appointment, so I could only give a quick glimpse to the shop windows. My impressions were mixed: the position of the boutique is absolutely incredible, just a few steps from the scalinata, but it is too small and nobody of the tourists seem to take care of it. With a bit of disappointment, I said to myself: "it's true, my poor beloved Country is really at the boundaries of the contemporary economic world". Then, I looked at the showcase: there were some watches and the Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month caught my attention, since in person it is far more beautiful than in pictures; moreover, the man of the boutique that arranged the price display had made a mistake and this very important piece had a price tag of less than six thousands euro!!! If this timepiece had positively impressed me, the rest of the watches on display left me a bit cold: I've sometimes criticized the brands that propose a lot of "new-vintage" timepieces, especially when they look simply "old", but with IWC I can't understand the sense of most of the latest launched products, I can't see a true IWC personality, and in general they seem to over-designed. With this last statement I want to say that a product claiming to be "Engineered for men" must have an overall coherence and must look plain and understated, without any frills and any bling. Do the current IWC collection - you have skillfully introduced in your article from Rome - respect this golden rule? I'm sorry, I would sadly say no.

What do you think?

Ciao,

Elio

I was on to trying to put my thoughts in words, and you did it better than I could do.

Totally agree with your last 4 lines, Ellio.

Very well put.

About the size of the boutique: I think it is the right one. I will not explain you the price of the square meter in this area. So if you wish to get an acceptable profitability, you don't have to increase your fixed costs. If not, you have to reach a very high sales volume. And I do believe, as you pointed it out that increasing the size will not increase the number of visitors. I'm sure that they carefully chose this size. Having said that, I found the boutique lay-out nicely designed.

About the IWC collection, I tend to disagree.  We always analyse the whole collection with our own perspective but we don't have to forget that a collection targets different markets and types of customers and not a single one. When we look at it, we find some nicely made and sober watches like the Ingenieur Automatic and even the new Portuguese Automatic. Some other watches are bulky with a more daring design. They are far from my expectations and I can't imagine to buy them.

You know, it is always the same with universal players like IWC: the collection is a gathering of everything to be sure to find customers somewhere for any watch. So the question for me is not to be happy with the whole collection but to find at least a  watch I like. And it is the case for me with the Ingenieur Automatic. And at the same time, some Ingenieur or Pilot watches are far from being my cup of tea.

Thanks for your detailed comments.

I get your points...

 By: heartbreaker : September 2nd, 2013-06:46

I get your points, François. Thank you for having added something interesting to the discussion.

About the boutique size: at the end, it's the location atmosphere and how you're welcomed that counts. Have you ever visited, for example, the microscopic JLC boutique in Via Montenapoleone, Milan? I think it's less than 25 sq.m., but it looks very nice.

About the IWC collection: I think that when a brand want to rapidly become "global" has only two main way, to become a bit "popular" or to work directly to very top of the market. If this [self-sufficient] theory of mine was right, I would put IWC in the first league, with the added charme of an old lady, ready to be put even on a "wrong wrist" just to show excellent figures. Moreover, I think IWC has one of the most powerful and consistent marketing department in the industry. That said, I want to confirm I like more than one piece in the current collection. Let's see how this prestigious Manufacture will evolve in the future, maybe they deserve more independence inside the Richemont Group???

Ciao,

Elio

I fully agree...

IWC is losing the essence of what made it successful. Especially the Fliegeruhr/pilot line is becoming more and more a joke. This line has become the caricature of a real tool watch.... Sad but I think it sells even better than before ...

It is obvious that...

these colored versions are far from what we can expect in this line.

I agree with you about this remark.

What a wonderful visit ...

 By: nilomis : September 1st, 2013-13:52
Besides of the watches (the simple Inge is very attractive), I like the architectural style that IWC is using on all boutiques.

Even here, yes we also have a boutique is SP/Brazil, the style is the same. Very cool.

I'm avoiding a visit to the boutique here because I know that is very hard to impossible to leave without a watch.

The only point that IWC needs to enhance are the size of the new line. Way to big to me.

Cheers,

Nilo

Thanks Nilo for your comments

I'm sure that the Sao Paulo boutique is much larger than the Rome one... about the watches yes you are right so if large diameters don't speak to you, it will be a problem here. The 40mm Ingenieur is maybe now the smallest IWC watch with the Portofino Automatic. And you have to consider that they can't house any IWC movements which are big. Some brands produce small movements, others big ones!

Thanks for your input.

The boutique in Sāo Paulo ...

 By: nilomis : September 1st, 2013-15:03
Based on your pics, is not bigger than the one in Rome.

The good news is that the sales persons knows A LOT about the brand and, better, they are great to negotiate prices, that are on pair with the international ones (rare here).

Cheers,

Nilo

Thanks Nilo.

I would have expected a larger boutique in Sao Paulo.
