Rolex

I don't own the most recent rendition of the Sea-Dweller. Though I am tempted. The Sea-Dweller 4000 has a lot to boast about. My first question is.....how many on this forum have one? What has been your experience?

My second question concerns the attraction of the modern Sea-Dweller versus the original 1665 Sea-Dweller. The vintage piece is captivating in so many ways. Maybe it is unfair to compare the two? In fact, it seems very unfair. The vintage has had time to develop patina in a way that the modern version never will. The vintage has its red writing that has become iconic to the watch. The vintage led he way for Rolex on dive pioneering, technological breakthrough and the establishment of Rolex as a serious tool watch. 

Yet, in a world where "and" is so much better than "or", is there room to have the 4000 and the 1665?

It's a fantastic watch. Very balanced and symmetrical look, slimmer (than the submariner) lugs and case shape, matte dial.

The only reason I let it go is because it's a bit thick for my skinny wrist, hence comfort sacrifices after wearing it for a few hours. But for people with 17+ wrists, this watch should fit perfectly!

I guess this is what makes fitting a problem in some cases.

So why not adding a modern iteration of the Seadweller? 

I am seriously tempted on the SD4000.

The 3235 is a great movement and it'll be in my next Rolex

....that Rolex will mark the 50th anniversary with some recognition of one of its most iconic watches. Maybe a Sea-Dweller with double line of red...... that would be quite something

...and I seriously consider it one of the best 6 digit Rolex sports watches. The combination of ceramic bezel, thinner lugs than the Submariner, matte black dial, Cromalight and the very comfortable Glidelock clasp makes it a winner imho.

It is a very comfortable watch. The glidelock bracelet is excellent. It really makes the watch very comfortable in all situations. I like the thickness of the piece. It has a nice wrist presence and feel. It is a wonderful watch. I highly recommend it. It is a great watch for any occasion including skiing in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

I tried very hard to like it but he lure of the lovely Great White was too great. I sold the 4000.

The matte dial is a nice touch too.

...collector, i.e. I feel that there is space for e.g. 6240, 16520 and 116520 in any collection. Just as well I have a 1665 DR, 16600 and, in the past, also a 16660. So yes, the new SD could fit well into the scheme.

And I would already own it if it had endlinks flush with the case horns rather than protruding ones. Also, I prefer a high gloss dial to the matte one.

I am very happy for these "defects" because it allows me to do without the new SD. The urge to get can become a pain sometimes! ;-)

I really like the tapered lugs on the Sea Dweller 4000. It changed the whole appearance of the watch. The watch does not have that boxy look that many of the modern Rolex sport watches have.

I really like the new 116600 and feel it's the nicest watch that Rolex currently makes.  The proportions are right with the trimmer lugs, fatter hands, and superb bracelet.  It's good to see Rolex sticking with the 40mm case and making a dive watch that is true to its roots.

I've had mine now for 6 months and it has not come off my wrist.  Very sticky watch for me.

The NSD is a very beautiful watch , with its full graduated bezel. An underrated modern rolex.
