I have always struggled with the term PRE Comex. It always struck me as an odd term and I have previously written and said is was just a maxi MK 1 dial. So I did a little more research as I was wearing my PRE Comex over the weekend. I found this on the 5513mattdial site (good stuff there). Quote below.
The first question many of you might ask is, “Who gave it that name and why?” Well here is your answer. Ed Delgado posted the following on VRF on October 24, 2008, “The term Pre COMEX I used initially a few months ago to refer to watches with very similar characteristics to some of the COMEX 5514 dials..(not all) Usually associated with watches in the 5 mil serial. no. It was not intended to be a term to be used for people to ask premiums on their watches, just to describe watches with similar characteristics..” Well there you have it from the guy who coined the term, and I think when you understand the context in which he intended it to be used, it is as helpful as calling a certain dial a Serif Dial and another a Non Serif Dial. Thank you Ed!
But that did not really answer the question or not really make feel like I get the term. Then today I got the proper explanation to share with all of you here so you can use the term freely knowing full well what it really means and how best to use it.
To put it in the most simple terms the original 5513 Comex watch i.e. the first ones produced with small numbers the 5513 Comex had no Comex logo on the dial. The 5513 from the around 1976/1977 ish era approx. 4 to 5 million serial range referred to as Pre Comex is exactly that. So the word missing that clarifies everything is "logo". So it is the "Pre Comex Logo" dial. Both dials share the similar Fat Rolex Coronet and depth over submariner. The only meaningful difference is the original 5513 Comex dial has the F and T aligned staggered while the pre comex logo dial are aligned in the middle.
You guys are thinking, we already know the term so what fuss. Well for me it was a light bulb moment.
Remember to use the full term in the future "Pre Comex Logo " dial.

Below you can see the F and T aligment. So I am happy once again to use the term Pre Comex Logo dial.
