That said i think we often overestimate our place in the watch world when it comes to things like this. The 'purist' dollar is buttons (as in, insignificant) in the grand scheme of things, we can't move this market or influence it in any meaningful way. While most here would have wet themselves (me included) if this had been smaller and sans cyclops my guess is Rolex wouldn't have sold much of that watch.
Omega answered the call in some way, but they are making a little over 3000 of the 38.5mm Speedy. The market on the other hand wants 42mm and 44mm watches and so they'll make many thousands more of those.
Could, should, Rolex have made a limited run of true to heritage SD's? Yes. But that doesn't seem to their way.
