I had done the bünd back piece years ago, and of course the strap, for another watch. But didn't work and kept it in the drawer.

Yesterday I found and tried it on the Tudor because the leather color looks very similar to that of the strap currently on the watch.













I know a gold (plaqué) watch is kind of a contradiction, because that kind of strap was used by pilots and military men, but I like the look.

Has anyone a gold watch on a bünd strap? A special Daytona comes to my mind...

I can only say that the 79030 (BB 58) is an amazing diving and everyday watch. Still, we must bear in mind that it is one of those revival, reedition, re(something) watches also. At every glance it takes you back to those diving watches from the fifties and the sixties but actually it is neither an old nor a vintage watch, and, at the end of the day you can feel that, especially if, as in our case, you own old watches. But that's the theme for a larger discussion.
Buy the fifty-eight, if you can, it won't let you down.

I'm a huge fan of bund straps. In your case the strap and bund pad work very well together, despite not being made for each other. Yeah, the history of the bund goes back to pilots watches but I do not believe it has to be restricted to pilot watches or Newman Daytonas. It gives any watch a cooler, sportier, more rugged look. And it looks great with your gold watch. I would stick with that pairing and enjoy it if I were you.

I remember to have read somewhere that Bünd straps were made for pilots because in case of a fire in the cockpit, a watch can easily reach high temperatures as to cause severe burns to the wearers skin.

Also, I have seen several adventure movies at which the protagonist wears a watch with a bünd or cuff strap.

Anyway I tend to relate this type of strap with adventurous people, which I like to see myself as kind of.

Looking for 18mm lug width which is hard to find.

In 20mm, 18mm and 16mm. They are supposedly made for the military pilots of the German air force. They are very well made and supple.

Let me do a quick search in the mail, and will get back to you.

Also any custom strap maker will be able (in theory) to make a Bünd strap for you.

Probably the easiest for you would be Difues on Etsy. If you want a custom bund, Rover Haven is the winner. Hodinkee has a few Newman style bund straps in their shop. Two other places I've come across are below:

Here's back to you. I couldn't find the original seller I bought the strap from originally, but making a quick search on the bay there is a seller named nato-international who has the same brand as the ones I bought and they have it in 18mm.
