Reminiscing...

 By: indignantdenial : March 14th, 2024-08:48
My former 118238. Sometimes I wonder whether this was worth parting with; often this occurs when I'm a little bit tired. Despite its faults, the watch was still generally wonderful. So then I regret having sold it. With where I am now, it still makes some sense as my priorities shifted. But I want to ask you some questions.

Have you felt the above feeling often? And, would you get the watch back, or do you think you can feel this feeling and safely know that it was a step in your collecting journey as your tastes evolved and needs changed? Anyway, I have a few good photos of this watch, so maybe I will share them over time!

There are maybe 10 watches I regret having parted with, in my whole life. Most of those I parted with, no, because as you said, it was a step in my journey.

Among the ten I let go, I tried to buy them again. Example: The Rolex Yacht Master. Some I cannot, because they went too high in price.

Painful...

Best,

Nicolas

Thanks for being honest.

It is painful when you try and realize you can't. Sometimes you don't know what you had until it's gone--not always--but sometimes. Cheers.

Absolutely. Like in life, in general, you have to loose something or someone to really feel the miss...

Thank you for posting. Absolutely agree, when priorities changes all perspective shifts. I have paired with few , instead of selling I gifted them to closest family members so they can enjoy and better understand my hobby.

That's a very nice idea, I really like what you did!

Only one did I regret

I sold an Explorer 1 and I rebought it. Still I wish I had kept the original one as it had a meaning to me i underestimated.

One is better than two, and so on...

 By: indignantdenial : March 14th, 2024-19:25
Glad you got it back, even if not that exact one. Underestimated meaning is a tricky thing to deal with; this is something I experience at times as well.

I had a few, but the one I really regret is the Saltarello.

Most others I bought back but slowly they left again…
Similar to getting back with an Ex, never workswink))

Ha! Maybe a case of the grass seeming greener on the other side.

Thanks for your reply and the photos. What a watch!

Usually yellow gold watches are not my taste, but here I must admit this DD is gorgeous. Thanks for the photo. Feel free to post many more 🤩

I've sold few watches.

 By: MilDiver : March 14th, 2024-14:18

For me there are 2 types of "regrets".
The easy one: Watches I sold for market price at the time (or less smile ) and now require stupid money. No real regrets here, for investment the stock market is my friend.,

The 2nd one, and that's not easy, is watches I sold that I just can't replace. usually rare variants and a super rare  good condition. Finding good examples of vintage these days is just impossible (or ridiculous amount, but with all the Frankenstein watches, even if I'd like to spend, I won't trust the genuinity of the watch),

The number one regret is an unpolished, untouched, in genuine original condition, full set/provenance 1675 Tiffany dial in NOS condition from its 1st owner.

But then, I recall why I sold them, they were too precious in condition to wear (I do wear my watches).

So, here's one to match your photo, oldie but Goldie...

Looks stunning.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

No regrets!

While your lovely Rolex is a wonderful wonderful watch and a dream watch for many, there was a reason why you let it go.  You weren't crazy about it.  And that's why you made the decision to let it go.  If you got it back today, chances are, you'd still have the same problem.  So I'd say you made the right move!

Very clear and very right, you are...

As much as I might have trouble admitting it, you're probably hitting the nail right on the head. Thank you for that!

When I buy something, I only buy something I'm crazy about!

When I first saw this one cold morning in Geneva, I was STUNNED!  WOW!  Oh my goodness that thing was cool.  Goodness!  I thought about it every day for over two months.  No exaggeration.  Some days I thought of it twice or thrice a day.  Then, realizing one night that I had to have it, I went back to MB&F and said I had to have it - I sent an email stating I had to have it and that I had been thinking about it every day for two months.  Well, the director at the M.A.D. Gallery knew that I was absolutely crazy about this piece and he had a lot of empathy for me, but his hands were tied because all of the pieces allocated for his store were spoken for.  Herve is a wonderful man and a wonderful Boutique Director.  So he kept a close eye for me and was able to get one for me.  Today, every time I see the piece, I think of the wonderful gentlemen at MB&F who were involved, the Co-Founder, the Marketing Director, and the Boutique Director.

Now, if you're thinking about that Rolex every day for two months!  Maybe you might need to get another one just like it!

Superb story and narration/advice

It's a story I try not to tell most people...

I don't want the public to know how obsessive I get sometimes!

I can understand. Some intimate things are better kept only for those who can comprehend them :-)

Exactly. So everyone, SHHHHH! I don't want the men in white coats to come and get me!

Here's a Youtube video of the piece...

Thanks for sharing Patrick! Very cool indeed

Great post, Patrick

And great advice. Take time to see how you feel about it.

Exactly!

In the UK, the image of the gold D-D is that it's worn only by second-hand car dealers and, even then, not in central London. I'd still like one, though. ;-)

Everyone has their needs and thinking.

But Rolex is definitely a keeper as I just notice the partial gold submariner/ GMT prices increased from $18k to $23k within a span of 3-4years while chit-chatting with colleagues during wristshot taking! Damn, I should bought it last time round although I never sell a single watch I bought.
