He guy's... yesterday i talked to a great friend about my collection, my wish towards a Big Crown, what to keep,.. which watch(es) to sell... maybe my 6263 Tropical, maybe the 5512 gilt,... and we stopped at the 6265 FAP...!!!!!!!

A watch i can't sell and want to keep in my collection... not only because it looks amazing, has a fantastic Tropical dial... but also because of it's military background!
But talking about it... Werner and i realized, that these watches are not only Daytona's with some military engraving, but actual are chronographs in real military use... as where the Milsubs and Big Crowns.

What do we know about them?????? There use,... the numbers,...

Well there are some informations on the net. But is there more information available?
Who can add some background and maybe even images of them in use???

Because... i guess there deserve a higher attention in the Rolex history and vintage community. As they are rare, beautiful and real issued Toolwatches!

unfortunately I don't have any more informations about the FAP Cosmographs at this point.

I think I have read an article once in an italian magazine...I will try to find it this evening.

All I can do for you is show another military oyster, with also a tropical dial... not a pilot's watch though:

A rare, collectable and quite stunning Rolex Cosmograph Daytona model ref 6265 Fuerza Aerea Del Peru (FAP) with faded Brown Sub dials and Silver Gilt writing. Often referred to as the Military Daytona.

Whilst the Rolex Military & Comex collaborations have enjoyed huge popularity among collectors, and deservedly so as they are very special watches. There are other special deliveries produced by Rolex, which may not have the features of the military subs or unique reference of a Comex 5514, but were often produced in fewer numbers and are still very interesting watches to collect.

Examples of such deliveries are the IFREMER/CNEXO and Marine Nationale dive watches and Fuerza Aerea Del Peru (FAP) cosmographs such as the one presented here.

The Rolex Fuerza Aerea Del Peru Cosmographs were produced with model references from 6238 to 6263/5 by Rolex for the Peruvian Air force in limited numbers (circa 700-800) between early 1960 and the mid 1980s, (the case numbers range from 1 to 6 million).

The colaboration between Rolex and the FAP is believed to have been due to the close friendship between the official Rolex dealer of Lima, and the late Heineger, Head of Rolex South America (& father of Patrick Heineger General Director of Rolex SA).

The Fuerza Aerea Del Peru Issued watches have also been noted on non daytonas, such as model ref 1680/1675 and even steel datejusts. We cannot provide any estimates of the numbers produced for these additional models.

The Fuerza Aerea Del Peru Cosmographs are often found with the following characteristics

Dials from 6239 to 6263/5 usually without the word daytona

Outer Case backs engraved with Fuerza Aerea Del Peru (engraved by Rolex, who have a record of the issue numbers) and very lightly engraved delivery numbers (often erased via polishing as with the early Comex 5513/4)

Inner Case backs with specific serial engravings

As with this particular watch, many of the dials found on the FAP Daytonas during this period, had sub dials which faded to a light brown colour, the sub dials also had a rare silver gilt writing, instead of the usual white. Like the Rolex Double Red Sea Dweller model ref. 1665 with Mk11 dials, the fading of the sub dials is believed to have occurred due to the pigment contained with the paint used on this particular batch. The result is beautiful to look at and has become very collectable.

I saw today a Dayto with brown subdials, exactly like yours, but not FAP!

This is a very tempting piece, and to add to the big cxharm of this watch, the bombed plexy is very sexy!

On VRF some guy's noticed,.. that a 6239 FAP with Newman dial had an chaged dial... they didn't think FAP where deliverd in Newman... but who know's!!!!

it is very hard to tell if the dial is original to the watch...

But a basic PN like yours would be enough for me, I have simple tastes ;-)

PS: by the way here's another military chronograph, this one for the French Navy.

500 watches only were issued in the early 60's with a beautiful caseback engraving. The brand is not bad either...

Today, I saw the same, but with the brown dial...

The tropical dial..... i have another one 6263 tropical (non-FAP)... will sell it for a BigCrown... but otherwise... i would never let it go!!!!
