Earlier this year i bought a 6150 Explorer. It was, in many ways, a replacement for the watch i was truly hunting, the 6610 red depth. As i posted a few weeks ago, i was finally united with my 6610 dream, and happily so. But almost every time i find a vintage that i have hunted, a very odd thing happens and that is I have this urge to find it a modern day "brother" so that my watches have partners in the overall collection. Its not always the case (I have no modern daytos for example) but it occasionally happens. Well it happened with the Exporer. The simplicity of the modern Explorer has always appealed, as too has the older version 36mm...so today i visted my local AD and found the below. Its a lovely watch to wear.
Now maybe just one or two more modern versions to add still..... but this is one i can wear in teh bath! The modern vrs vintage debate goes on and on...i love both

...that also deserves full attention
So which one is getting the most wristtime?
I have done the same on a few occasions but tend to wear the moderne and keep the vintage in the safe..
Cheers
Hans
I bought exactly the same for my mother in law, and, from time to time, she lets me use it...
Charming watch, as all the Explos, Vintage or Modern.
I may have a nice surprise, as we speak about Explos, in the 2 next weeks...
Great catch, my friend, maybe even greater than the latest version...
Best,
Nicolas
Thanks very much...
Hans, i tend to wear them all quite equally actually, unless i am doing something more energetic and then the vintage stay in the safe. I also like the idea of having some watches that "can" take a knock and withstand it. I have a Bremont that does that too. Should take a look at Bremont...always room for one Bremont in the collection!
Nico, i was tempted by the one with no lume, but in teh end just had to take the lume. I love the fact that it lights up the bedroom at night!
The modern vrs vintage issue is one that fascinates me. I love my 6610....truly love it. Its charm is huge. But would i give it the same wrist time as the new Explorer? My answer is yes...they both get about the same time. I would guess that on average i wear a watch for 2 days. I have a box of 4 on my desk that will usually see me through the week, and then at the weekend i will dip into the vintage. Some vintage get more than others....the Tudors get a lot of wrist time compared to the JLC...just the way it is. But i have to say, i do get tremendous pleasure from owning and using both modern and vintage. This Explorer has been nagging at me for a while. There is just one other modern Rolex that does that that I have managed not to get hooked by.....
Clue...."don't worry about a 'ting, cos every liddle ting gonna be all right". My problem with that specific watch is that there is too much metal around teh lugs...needs to be softened...needs a nato i think.
