Rolex

During the recent service of my 5513 Maxi, I had the domed crystal swapped out for a sapphire crystal. Since this is my daily wearer, it seemed to be a pragmatic decision. Also, it was recommended by the watchmaker as it he noted that the sapphire crystal does a better job at keeping the watch water resistant.

Although I prefer the look of the dome, it just got scratched too easily as I really 'wear' my watches.

Has anyone else gone this route? What are you thoughts about the water resistant recommendation? Would you just keep the dome crystal and replace it as necessary?

I think that the plexys are still available and I would keep my watch as close to original as possible.

I too would retain the original plexi..... changing to a saphire makes the watch lose its original vintage character and charm. Maybe you could do the next best thing, buy another watch (with saphire crystal) to wear those days when you were more likely to scratch it up, and stick with the plexi crystal watch those days you knew you were going to be safer!

Hi, Joey,

In my modest opinion, you lose part of the charm of your 5513 by swapping out the super dome for a saphire.

Perhaps a 16800 or maybe an early 1990's 14060 could be a great alternative for the beater you are looking for.

BTW, the patina on your 5513 is to die for! And, the nato you have it on, also very cool.

I can't imagine a vintage 5513/5512/1680 with a saphire but with a plexi only about the 168000 plexi too.

Such a Bomb should get ITS Domed plexy... With its sapphire, it is  do flat, so charmless, so " sexyless " so ... BORING.

A sexy girl in a convent... A pity.

You can't swim with it?

Take another watch for that purpose!

You know what? Send the watch to me and I'll supply you with 10 Casio super duty watch that is accurate as NASA's control room. Then you can dive, swim, flame throw, bang it and do all kind ogf crazy stuff with it. When you're done destroying all 10. No problem, I'll send another 10 or 20 in one shot, your call.

...I shouldn't say rescue but convert her from being the sexy girl in the Convent to maybe elsewhere where the sexiness can be appreciated by putting back the domed plexi and get rid of the flat sapphire crystal.

Looks so different with the dome

The water resistance will not suffer due to using the original acrylate plastic crystals. Plus, the Rolex plastic crystals are super cheap, while the Rolex sapphire crystals are much more expensive. I think one of the coolest parts of the older models is the thick, domed plastic crystal.
