Of late, I've been searching for a pre-owned Explorer 1. Initially, I was thinking of a 14270. And of course the devils here are tempting me with the 1016, you know who you are : ) believe me, I spent a good number of hours learning and soaking in as much from the web.

 

But after giving it some thought and since my plan is to eventually give it to my other half as her daily wear. I decided that a 114270, might just be the best choice. The lumes shine brightly when needed, no worries on water tightness, a better clasp design, etc. A real tool watch you need not worry it will fail on you. And because she is not a watch person like many us here, I think the watch has to be a real "beater" tool watch. All her current watches bear the battle scars of daily wear.

 

So today I saw these two (a 2001 & 2005 series). Both reasonably priced, comes with papers but I noticed a small difference on the dial design and I am hoping someone can verify it for me. I notice the  5-minute track markers (not sure what is the correct term), on the 2001 model is thicker than the 2005 model. Is this correct? Should this be any concern? Even the coronet on the clasp looks slightly different.

I have seen both versions from good sellers so I would assume both are correct.  I have also seen with t>25 versions.

I am sure you will get some more accurate info.  But at first glance looks good.  They key however is to buy from reputable sellers and you should have no risk as they stand behind their sales.  If the deal is too good to be true it is most likely one to pass on.

2001 one. I've owned both, and I can tell you, the problem isn't at the bottom, it is the crown on the dial. The 2001's crown looks much better and natural. This type of crowned was produced along the other one (the 2005 one in your photo), and can still be found in 2005 as a F series.

 

But, based on these two, definitely go with the 2001 version. Once you realize how much nicer the crown is, it is a no-brainer.

I like the coronet crown on the clasps better too.

I just needed to verify this difference in the dial printing of the minute track

Why not consider a pre loved GMT?

More choices to consider. There are just so many on my list.

Pre-loved GMT...hmmm....that depends on the price and condition. U know one?

Haven't got the Exp1 yet, been real busy lately

Coke dial with red color on the bezel aged to now redish. The fade on the red us nice. Dated back to 2001 full warranty papers boxes calendar very nice. Correct bracelet number. The only thing which bothers me is that it was polished case and bracelet. No parts repaired or replaced. Serviced and authenticated by RSC itself. Missing 2 links but the damn watch fits me well. My treasurer questioned me when I was so tempted. She asked " how many watches can you wear on one wrist " and " do you want to buy the whole Rolex ? " if u get what I mean. it was a nice watch. It was pre-loved shop with many Crowns. They have the Sea Dwellers, the Deepsea, Subs, even Explorers. Expected market price if u were to get one in the UK maybe better.

Thats the thing about pre-loved watches in kl. Prices are always just a notch higher than what we see online. But after a bad experience previously, i am not as willing to do online purchases anymore when the sum gets bigger.

Choices are limited when we try to find complete, all original, unpolished and at a decent "acceptable" price. Saw a nice Exp2 (t-dial) which is another on my list, but no papers, sub-par polishing job and priced a tad high considering everything.

Maybe we are jus too picky on the little details....bet the retailers don't like "collectors" like me. A lot of nitpicking and still not buying. Haha...sometimes I feel bad. Too bad I don't have tons of money and can just spend at will. So it's back to the fishing pond for me, ....patience....a lot of patience required to find the right piece, at the right price in the right conditions.
