A picture of an early Explorer: As underated as beautiful.
Much rarer than a Paul Newman, but not less desirable, this Explorer 6350, Serpico Y Laino ( Venezuelan retailer ) from 1953.
Sorry, but I can't remember where I got this remarkable photo and who to credit for it. I will happily credit him upon request.
Indeed this watch has some superb ingredients: The honeycomb dial, the gilt writinig, and hands. Look at the hour minute hand, this is not a detail we often see!
This long hour hand can be also found on a later reference, the early 6610 with the red writing, like this one I had the pleasure to take in picture:

I am still surprised that we don't more often mention these Explorers in our conversations. We are not far from the Holy Grail category, IMO.

Remember clearly back in the early 90's these two beautiful and very rare ref....
Were grails for Rolex collectors
The 6350 in this condition and configuration was more valuable
then a Daytona 6239 and desired like a 6538
Just what changed? I think the size revolution killed it

Size is a limit in the people's mind
but when they'll put it on the wrist consequently they change their feeling about them.

Explorers has many variants and references, honeycomb, red write, also the rare white dial, but also lollypop is very rare, this is the one I'm wearing right now !

Explorer has its charms and until today, it is liked because partly of its size at
at 36mm and it did not join the ranks where Rolex introduced fatter lugs, 40mm which looks larger and maxi dials, etc. Compared to other brands even, the Exp I still look cool at what is considered small for it's size. Real beauties u got there. So humble, small but packed with a lot of punch. Beautiful pieces.
Well, the Explo IIs were not much successful, and they were 40 mm big.
So I don't see the size as a major explanation...

Maybe because Exp I was so successful and to repeat that success
you may need more magic. Vintage orange hand is sought after now. Maybe it needs longer time especially for the 16570 series, imo. But if u compare the older Exp I with the newer one at 39mm, I am not sure I this size difference had any impact on preference.

Nicolas, I very much agree with you once again. Funnily enough I was never a Newman fan (the watch) I am not sure why - maybe because
they are so sought after that I turn the other way. I think the Milgauss is also very underated! Its stunning, important historically and equally as beautiful with the honeycomb dial. I will post a picture of one later. Best Edmond

Look at their value on the different collectors markets, they are much higher...

Fashions come and go....
.....it happens in virtually every line of work. In art, one minute impressionism is the mode, the next minutes its all about up-and-coming chinese artists. Same is true with clothing fashion. One decade, flared jeans are the mode. Then nobody would be seen dead in flares. Then it comes back.
But, there is a bottom line....great artists are ALWAYS great. They may not always be "in fashion" but they are always great. Take someone like Marc Chagall. His work has not always been fashionable, but he has always been a great artist and as fashions cycle around, eventually it comes back to a simple question. What is class? Class always shines through.
These unfashionably "small" Explorers are currently not in mode. But they are still class and still great. I wonder before how long they revert back and become super-grails again? For sure it will happen. I wonder...as the Chinese discover vintage Rolex....I wonder whether the smaller scale watch will be more appropriate for a smaller wrist.....then what???

I just recently saw a spectacular 6350 waffle dial which was to die for.
I told the shop I would get back to them while I study this reference.
Once I was ready to go back- it was already sold.
Here is the watch.
One thing is for sure. Before 2015 ends I will have a nice 6350
+1 on all of that.. Have been looking for a while now, but still elusive yet.. One day !..
