Rolex

not really 'apples with apples', my guess, from a price perspective. A good 1019 black dial milgauss should be at least double the price of even the nicest 5513 gilt submariner, isn't it? Still: I would go for the Milgauss 1019, for me currently a bit under-rated, a great watch, and for me together with the Orange Hand Explorer II the most 'a-typical' Rolex and therefore interesting. On the other hand, if what you are after is the 'iconic' Rolex-esque style, than the Submariner is the one to go for. Therefore I am a bit surprised by your choice of 2, since you have chosen the two end of the Rolex-extremes (most typical/archetypical Rolex watch, versus the most 'unlike Rolex' Rolex watch). But maybe that's the question you are asking? I myself am always a bit of a 'contrarian', besides a big fan of anti-magnetic models for all brands, and therefore would go for the Milgauss.

....and almost impossible to answer. I have two watches at the very top of my wish-list...a 5512 Gilt vrs a 1019. So i do understand your dilemma. The two watches are, of course, extremely different. So it seems that you are not being torn by an aesthetic. 

Absolutely understand that they are a little apples and oranges but still fruits.  The 5513 is full b and p (almost 50 years old)with a flawless gilt dial and in raw condition.   The milgauss (from 1968) is watch only and in very good condition but certainly polished. Not a big deal as I will wear either one.     So your instinct is spot on in that one is a specimen example and one is merely a very good example but im def paying full freight for the 5513 whilst im getting good value for the 1019. My heart says 5513 because the gilt dial is gorgeous but ive always wanted a 1019 milgauss.  Tough one.  

I err to the 5513 in your case as I think finding specimen versions of such a watch is truly difficult. IF you are indifferent between the two on the wrist, then it really does boil down to issues like this.....with early gilt Subs, finding one in mint condition is no easy task, and paying full-freight or not, I think I would go down that path. I can find at least 3 1019s that I like within a week. I can certainly find early Subs that I like....but none of the owners will sell!

You have a solid reason to lean towards the 5513 gilt.  That is from the stand point that you have a mint watch in complete condition.  However, unless you just plan to buy that watch and never wear it you may consider the Milgauss if you feel less risk wearing it.

But at the end of the day these watches are meant to be worn and enjoyed.  Find the one that is most appealing to you and jump on.
