What are you hunting for?
Lets be honest, one of the fun aspects of vintage Rolex is the "hunt". Sometimes a hunt can last years and sometimes it is over very quickly. So lets hear it....what is your Number One target now...
I will tell you mine.....its a 1965 Gilt 5512 Submariner.
After I bought this one last year, I decided I wanted the subsequent rendition of the model.
For me Joe it's a 6263
My next one has to be a 6263 black dial with black bezel
I just love this watch configuration with the screw down pushers which
gives the watch a chunkier feel than a 6239
My first vintage Rolex was a black 6263 about 10 years ago which I had to sell a few years
later to put the money towards a house move and I've never really
got over that watch. So watch this space and hopefully I'll have one soon

But still sadly not finding one with any form of paper work or even a recent Rolex service certificate.
Perhaps I should correct this, I can find with the white gold surrounds on the index's, but not one with the complete tritium index's.

What do you mean by subsequent rendition? You mean the next model within the 5512?
Does that mean a 4L PCG? Or the white print non pcg vesion that came around 1967/1968?
Or a 5512 underline dial? Christies has a very nice 5512 coming in May.
I am doing a 5512 in depth analysis which you will find interesting- will post that soon.
As for what I am hunting?
For sure another sub to add to my three ones owned.
And another GMT Master. A 6542 but will it be gloss dial? Tropical?
With faded bakelite? In-tact bakelite? Not really sure yet.

Either a porcelain dial early Daytona or a winner's Daytona
I just concluded what was probably close to a 10 year pursuit of a COMEX SeaDweller. That watch is now being serviced which has led me to wearing a Daytona my in laws gave for an engagement present 11 years ago. This has led me to read up on the Christies auction last year. It also invoked memories of my grandfather and his daily wearer...a 14k 6241 Black Paul Newman Daytona. That is my holy grail but is impossible to find and even if you did it would be impossible to buy. This has taken me to pursue what I think is genesis for the Daytona myth that we know today. That would be the first 'modern' Daytona, the 1988 r porcelain dial. These are fairly rare and hard to find though one is coming up next month at the. Geneva Christies auction. I think that would be a great rare historical piece. It was the impossibility of buying the new. Daytona that helped generate interest in the older vintages. A winner's Daytona I think would be a great addition because it is the best example of what the watch was made for. I don't know if I will ever conclude this search or not but they are what I'm hunting now. Of course a PN 6241 on a. Jubilee would be choice number one but it would be more than my 5970 PP by a long way I think.
What is interesting is the vast spread of different desires....

Hunting and dreaming are two different things.
I am dreaming of a 6200, but this is not very realistic... A military 1675 as well... UAE is my favourite. Or a 6542 " Red ".
I am hunting some tough watches: Tudor 7922, 7924 ARA, for example.
Some easier to grab, a Tudor MN Submariner Ref 94010 or a 7928 Ci, or a Monte Carlo 7159.
Rolex? 1665 DR MK II, 1019, 1675 Underline are my hottest targets.
A 16550 Black Rail in perfect condition ( touhg! ) would be great, as well as a Dayto 16520 black.

......my net is wide, but my focus always needs to be narrow!
I am evaluating a lot of different themes and I think my collection is taking some new directions, but adding another 5512 is one of these "focus" targets.
1019 is one we share...but I will make a prediction...it has been high on my buy-list for the last 5 years and I have never pulled the trigger...i suspect my net has a lot of such targets....targets that most likely always get pushed aside.
5512...yes...big target for me now. Mostly because I just adore the 5512 I already have....but also because I just would like a 65 Sub.

the " desert sub " ( aka " black sub " ) in his outstanding and " cold " beauty ....
absolutely stunning charcoal colour ... very cold to the touch with
case, back and metal strap teflon coated ( of course with Rolex Geneva confirmation) .. maybe only 3 ( or 5 ? ) done : saw it " live " in 2000 and the requested price was roughly equal to 5 comex 1665 ..
but you are right : it's more a dream than a hunt ...
the watch was presented with his special pristine dial with extra-small indexes faded to dark-brown due to African sun ( in this picture is shown with a standard dial .. don't know why ) .
in my bloody partisan opinion .. the most rare, peculiar and interesting thin ever done by Rolex ...
a watch not certainly for all and not for his value ...

I would compare it to the essential Malevich's square ....
very few people were able to appreciate the " simply cold " beauty of this watch .... for the couple of hours spent together was able to create in me the same sensations you feel watching at the winter North Sea ....

Where was it bought by the SAF Army? At a Rolex AD, or directly to Geneva?

btw this is the only example of teflon coating ever seen ( and most likely the very only one made ) :
the watch was completely un-reflecting even under direct sun light .. had a sort of alien-look ..
not easy to describe .
