What is your "go-to" Rolex
I was wondering this issue...I want to go out, but I am not sure what I am going to do. I could go swimming. Maybe go hiking. Maybe some lunch. Maybe a meeting in the afternoon. I want a low-key, under-the-radar watch to wear that can be worn with many different hats. I am going on a vacation and want a watch that can suit many situations. What is my "go-to" Rolex? I am not talking about a watch that is particularly special....just the "one" that I so often pick up as my wearer.
For me it boils down to a choice between two.
The GMT 'Bruiser"and the Explorer. Choosing between these two is hard. I think I see the GMT as my favourite modern Rolex. But, the downside to it is that it is very distinctive. It looks every inch a Rolex. The Explorer 1, on the other hand, is almost the perfect stealth watch. No complications. Small and unobtrusive. As reliable as anything that Rolex makes. Yes, for me this is the ultimate stealth watch and so often my "go-to" watch.
Hat-tip to anyone who can tell me what is unusual about the first shot (Mods not allowed to play).

The Explorer II.
Great for any situation + the extra timezone!

Ahh the Explorer II ...
I miss my pair (Black and White) a lot.
I may get one (not rusty but not new) and ask to my watchmaker to remove the cyclops.
With a leather strap, it may be less risky to "walk here, on the wild side".

The Explorer is the watch to go with.
But if you add travels in your plans, then the Bruiser is an even better choice.

hello Joe! my go-to Rolex is a 14064M Sub...
... with leather straps.
I feel that wearing it without its Oyster bracelet takes off some of its "Rolex identity" which is something desirable while walking in some places in my city or in certain situations here.
It is a tough and reliable watch that though lacking the charm of my vintage Subs still mantains the enjoyment of wearing a Rolex diver watch.
Regarding your nice Explorer, I feel that it is one example of the rare "black out" version of this watch. I also own a modern Explorer (regular version) which I also employ as a go-to Rolex sometimes.

... leather should not be the best option for a diving watch if you intend to wear the watch in water, dive, etc. I wear this watch with its original Oyster bracelet when scuba diving.
But for informal daily wear I love the use of leather straps on my watches, and employ them from time to time for a little change in looks, and find them comfortable and charming looking.
It is very worth trying them! They also give an "unRolex" look to my watch which is something desirable here in my city of Buenos Aires, where robbers pay much attention to Rolex on wrists to try to catch them in certain areas. Rolex is their favorite trophy and the Oyster bracelet is the first thing they seem to notice!
Regarding the watch, you may have the 14060 (without "M") whose two line dial I much prefer its for its cleaner look . Regretably, when I bought my 14060M four liner the previous model was already discontinued.

I would have to say the Rolex 16660 comes out often
Basically the Rolex 666 offers a lot namely I don't worry about scratches on the crystal or case for that matter. But having said that I have added another vintage choices that are getting a lot of wrist time and no worries about scratches. The The Fat Lady 16760 with a twist. But to be honest scratching the plexi on any 5513 or 5512 in the collection does not bother me as it is easy to fix. The hesitation is only one of waterproof really swimming which is the only cause for hesitation in any selection.

....i think i have a mental check-list that eliminates a watch for me.....
If i am going to be swimming, then essentially any watch from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s gets eliminated. Plexi similarly goes.
.....if I am going to be anywhere that could scratch or bash a watch, then any complication is eliminated.
....if i am going to be anywhere that requires a lower-profi,e watch, then any me talk other than steel goes.
So often, that leaves me with the Explorer I.
Having said that, my 16660 is more one that I use for pure pleasure rather than purpose.
I usually pick my 16800 Tiffany & Co.
It's my travel watch because it can face any sitation and has everything for the modern life. Patina and rarity are the icing on the cake.
With a 16800
you have the comfort of knowing that it is modern enough to protect that dial....as yes, with that patina and being a Tiffany ....you get that extra joy of seeing something rare on your wrist.
On this front, there is an edge over the Explorer...indeed

* GMT complication (useful for overseas business and travel)
* Coke can be dressed up or down
* Robust for everyday wear; Basically scratchproof

Love ´em both!!
Now, if I wanted to tone the Sub down a bit, I swap the Oyster bracelet for nato bands and those do the trick marvelously.
