Seiko

While my better half was getting vaccinated today, I decided to kill some time by visiting a nearby mall and came across a watch which I had never really given much attention to.  I had seen the dial before in press photos but not really in real life but what really won me over was the size of the watch - a Seiko that wore well on my small wrist.  In our beloved forum we tend to focus a lot on Swiss and German masterpieces but I have an equal admiration for the English and Japanese watch makers. So this latest purchase of mine will soon by sharing a space with a Patek Philippe, a Moritz Grossmann, a Glashutte Original, a Kikuchi Nakagawa, a Laine and a RW Smith.  All quite different watches with one thing in common - they are all dress watches!  That's my small collection and for me that is the recipe for horological nirvana!  :;-)

Great value in my opinion and a joy to wear.

Seiko make some fantastic value watches and can come in very handy as a daily no worries wearer I’ve added a few these last couple of year’s. Sounds like you have a fantastic collection too 👏👏

It has taken me a long time to fully appreciate the Presage range and this dial in particular has won me over.  Arguably it would have been even nicer without a date window but hey, near perfection at this price range is more than I can ask for. And the Mrs says thank you

Finally the Glashutte Original returns to the watch box after 7 months and this instead is likely to be my daily wearer until perhaps the arrival of the Laine.

You know i am a fan of Seiko (Presage) watches and this one looks so amazing and beautiful. I always enjoy strapping one on my wrist. Excellent value imho . Wear it in best of health

How i collect watches.

A bad Seiko experience was my decision to avoid all that not made in the country where the Matterhorn rise up in the landscape, and were a city called Basel was the place of the biggest watch show.

I bought 5 peaces from that country, and all 5 peaces are jackpot.

Maybe my big wrist is the key for the love of the great 5.

Fort me, bad watch experiences can come from almost any brand - I have a fellow purist whose Patek 5164A kept malfunctioning and my Lange 1 malfunctioned after a week.  Japanese products in general tend to be the most reliable in my personal experience but I am sure even they can malfunction.

My Honda is unbreakable.

I drove 3, and they feld you can drive around the world and only you have to do is filling the tank.

I had a VW which was superb.

and VW is a superb brand too but are among the most unreliable in Malaysia due to the weather. They are so popular and reliable in Europe though. But coming back to watches, Japanese watches are very well made be it a Citizen or a Credor. I worked in a Japanese company for 25 years and the quality control was beyond reproach.

VW in Malaysia could be Chinees made.

This German made VW i drove with much pleasure.

but they are mainly quartz I believe. Once a brand makes mechanical watches, problems will creep in - the question would be how often and how many.

The car companies rely on joint ventures.
Only the Japanese car companies can keep up the quality when producing abroad of the home country.

I never experienced Lange.
It is a hype and i follow my own path.

requires much focus and discipline. Well done!  To be fair to Lange, they do produce quality watches but they may not be for everyone.  Many Patek lovers I know would vouch for that 

Patek is an undiscovered path for me.

The prices for new and worn Pateks is so high, i can not buy any, and i see not much great designs either.
The beauty of Patek must lay in the watch making qualities.
It seems i can not see creativity in what they do.

You had a Patek visit.

Patek make thin watches with complex movements.
Than i wil point to Piaget with the Altiplano watches.
Look how creative they are, and for sure taste is a personal experience.

If i chose between Lange and Patek, than i wil always chose Patek.
Nothing wrong with Glashütte brands, but why i should have something from Glashütte while people in La Chauds de Fonds make real time arts?

Audemars Piguet is atractive, and their watches have that character of being for ever.
In a kind of way Patek is the same.

but their thin watches are not grand complications like Patek ie Patek are able to make very thin perpetual calendar watches, split second chronographs and even minute repeaters small and thin. That requires immense skill and knowledge.  If one were to credit a company just for thin manual winding watches then apart from Piaget. JLC , Vacheron Constantin and Citizen come to mind.

Look and feel in a store or place were such a watches displayed is a way to know and understand them better.

I’d had ones a Breguet Marine in my hands and it was a special feeling.

I have been observing Seiko and it is as if they are placing their lovely dials in the Presage range and the superb movements in the Grand Seiko range.  Yes there are some nice Grand Seiko dials but the Presage in my opinion wins hands down.  Of course, if one wants a great dial with a superb movement, a Credor Eichi ll is always there to choose from!    Thanks for your feedback.
