If I recall this correctly, the first claim to fame for the Alpinist line was when all the Rolex Explorer watches stopped working on a Japanese polar expedition and the team accepted an accompanying journalist’s Alpinist instead, which uncomplainingly finished the journey. Having been responsible for marketing for long enough in my career, we’ll call this a fun story, just like 99% are fun stories, whether true or not 😊
At any rate, even if your daily challenge is just whipping up lunch, the watch will be equally well suited to the task - up to 200m of soup resistance included 🍜

And Seiko absolutely true. And I have no reason to doubt it - but find these stories don’t do much for me, neither Seiko’s, nor Omega’s, Rolex’s or anybody else’s 😊🤷🏻♂️
Then that’s a testament that I couldn’t ignore being impressed by.
I’m curious if your work in marketing is the reason why select brand stories don’t impress you much (eg sensationalism), or that has always been your nature to not be influenced by stories as opposed to personal/hands-on experience? I ask because I had taken a marketing class in business school and was/am honestly intrigued by the science, analytics, etc that goes into this discipline.
I have had to do brand building several times in my career…
And did some consulting in this area previously, too. I guess I was relatively brand immune even beforehand and for quite some time I was proud of being able to find an exciting car I would enjoy from every single (reasonably sized) car manufacturer. This would possibly still be the case but now I am getting older and don’t take the time to check the model lines worldwide anymore 😊🤷🏻♂️ And many lineups got a lot more boring, too - sadly 🤦🏻♂️
But brands - while fascinating as theoretical constructs, and very effective as marketing instruments - don’t sway me personally.

So the Story goes the Seiko Sagarmartha SBCW021 was developed in collaboration with Ken Noguchi, his feedback was to remove the minute markings on the actual dial due to effects of altitude on the brain that make simple mental tasks difficult and something as easy as reading the time could be confusing with all the markings on the dial. Seiko also to reduce the weight and increase scratch resistance incorporated a ceramic metal alloy in the bezel to make it scratch resistant. There were two versions of this model the SBCW021 (the one featured above next the Grand Seiko SBGA031) which came out in 1998 and the SBCW027 which came out in 1999, I think it was the SBCW027 which was tested on his ascent of Mount Everest in 1999,

That one was the limited edition done in concert with the famous Japanese Alpinist. Would love to get one someday 🤞🏻
