Thanks for the input.  I will probably go back except in a suit this time and try them both on again.  What looked very reasonable in the mirror seems enormous now and now the medium is looking a bit small on my wrist judging from the picture.  I guess its tough looking at pictures which are from solely a straight on angle.  I will update everyone about the decision for sure!

I'd go with the large

It looks fine on your wrist. Admittedly it is a bit large for a dress watch in terms of traditional definition but by modern conventions it'll do just fine.

Thank you to everyone for the comments.  I went back to the store and after much thought have decided on the larger size!  The pictures are really quite deceiving since they are up close and from a single angle.  After looking in the mirror for quite a while I found that the small was too small.  The gold bezel sits within the broader border of steel, and it makes both sizes seem smaller than they really are.  I liked the presence on my wrist that the larger size had, and I preferred the wider looking strap too.  Thank you again to everyone in helping me through my decision on here, in particular to SJX for the great writeup.  Pictures to come!

Congrats!

Gold bezel, brown strap I assume? Looking forward to pictures.

Good choice to go with the large model.
