In the world of luxury watch collecting, the concept of a 'grail watch' often sparks debate: is it a final destination or merely a milestone? Watch-guy.com, a respected voice in the community, shares his deeply personal journey to complete a rare Patek Philippe 9-90 puzzle, culminating in the acquisition of a pristine pink gold Ref. 1593. His narrative explores the profound satisfaction of achieving a long-sought horological goal and the unexpected serenity that follows.

The exit watch as it is called. A fabled acquisition which when purchased satiates your appetite for purchasing any further watch .
Does it really exist or is it a concept us watch fanatics create to make us feel like we are on a journey with a fixed path and timeframe ?
Well let me tell you all a story.
I have been on a quixotic search for the final piece in my 9-90 puzzle.
I have written numerous times about my desire to find a pink gold ref 1593 to complete the set including yellow and platinum ( as far as I know they were not made in white gold )
I have passed up multiple offers from collectors , dealers and auction houses . Case too polished , dial refreshed or worse - reprinted , crystal replaced

Every and any excuse was found . Until now
I was on insta and saw one for sale . Currently on holiday I was definitely not watch shopping and not intending too. But this one looked really good dial looked perfect with no sign of human intervention case was crisp with hall marks and French import marks ( an eagle head )
I accidentally passed the shop and they had the watch for sale
Everything checked out Everything was perfect It looked almost brand new with lovely edges to the case and the dial had high enamel letters with a lovely layer of aged zapon lacquer
I just could not fault it

So Now how do I feel after the purchase
Surprisingly serene
I feel like I now longer needs to chase windmills
I cancelled most of my inst accounts I was following ( dealers ) and am only following collectors whom I feel have the same collecting ethos and style similar to me
I actually think this is it and I can close the collecting doors and enjoy what I have
Maybe this feeling will change but I hope not I am enjoying the idea that I have stuck to my plan of only buying a watch that is in excellent condition and not compromised at all
Nothing more is required
For your enjoyment here is the full collection in yellow pink and platinum

About the Patek Philippe Complications Ref. 1593

The Patek Philippe reference 1593, introduced in 1944, is notable for its distinctive "Hour Glass" case shape. This design features a gentle curvature along the sides that tapers inwardly towards the center, creating a silhouette reminiscent of an hourglass. This unique case profile sets it apart from more conventional rectangular or tonneau-shaped watches of its era, making it a recognizable piece within Patek Philippe's historical catalog.

The watch is housed in a yellow gold case, measuring 23x37 mm. It is powered by the manual-winding caliber 9''', a movement known for its reliability and precision. The crystal is typically acrylic, with some examples featuring a faceted crystal at the narrowest part of the case, while others have a curved crystal. The fixed bezel frames a silver dial.

For collectors, the reference 1593 represents a distinctive design chapter in Patek Philippe's mid-20th century production. Its unusual case shape and the variations in crystal and case side profiles offer points of interest for enthusiasts. The reference appeals to those seeking a Patek Philippe with a strong aesthetic identity and a departure from standard case forms.

But you never know, and maybe you'll find something to feed your appetite once more... I don't really believe in the theory of grail watches being an exit watch. Because there is something else, which is called Passion, which will always makes you stay away from your initial and temporary resolutions. Well, I am not sure about what I am typing, either... I have a list of around 15 grails. And I am not sure on how I will feel when and if I am able to score all of them. )) But for that, I will hav

. . . led to pretty much the same result: the drive to accumulate even more has dissipated. I've long admired your devotion to the 9"' - 90; thanks very much for sharing here. Art
