Ted O, a seasoned Rolex collector, initiates a crucial discussion for enthusiasts navigating the current market: identifying the 'best' Rolex Submariner for the money. His inquiry focuses on models that offer significant wrist presence and classic aesthetics, rather than purely investment potential or vintage rarity. This article synthesizes community insights to guide collectors through the diverse Submariner references available today.

Given the Rolex Submariner’s classic, timeless design β€” for someone who has never owned one (but has other Rolex, including Deepsea) β€” and under current market conditions β€” what’s the best Sub for the money right now?

Again, given it’s classic and consistent look, it does not need to be vintage or new β€” but I do like to feel my watch in terms of weight/presence, if possible β€” but not the main focus here.

As mentioned, goal here is best for money (NOT AS AN INVESTMENT) right now given releases over the years to choose from, which I feel is a good thing for someone looking.

Please advise as to which and why, and send pics if possible β€” thanks!

About the Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 Ref. 116600

The Sea-Dweller reference 116600 marked the return of the 40mm case size for the model, a dimension that had been absent from the Sea-Dweller lineup for some time. This reference reintroduced several classic Sea-Dweller design elements, distinguishing it from its larger contemporary, the Sea-Dweller 4000. It was produced for a relatively short period, making it a notable transitional model within the brand's professional tool watch offerings.

This reference features a stainless steel case measuring 40mm in diameter and 15.3mm in thickness. It is equipped with a unidirectional rotating bezel made of black ceramic with a 60-minute graduation. The watch is powered by the automatic caliber 3135, offering a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. A sapphire crystal protects the black dial, which includes a date complication without the cyclops lens, a characteristic feature of the Sea-Dweller line.

Appealing to collectors who appreciate traditional proportions and the technical capabilities of a professional dive watch, the 116600 is recognized for its blend of heritage design and modern materials. Its limited production run contributes to its appeal among enthusiasts seeking a Sea-Dweller with a more classic case size and specific aesthetic details, such as the matte-like black dial and the absence of the cyclops over the date.

Having just gone through a similar process, I thought the Kermit was the right choice for me. I was drawn to the looks, the history, and the fact that it is just a little bit different than other subs. Fwiw, I also considered a two line, no date sub.

I know--you asked for a Submariner and I gave you a Sea-Dweller! But that ref, the 16600, is currently cheaper than any Submariner reference while being better than most of them.

...was on another board. "...11 series. 😎: "It's bulky. It's chunky. It's just stumbled out of a bar at 3am, looking for a fight. And it's exactly what the Submariner always wanted to be." Looks great on rubber strap too.

with the MKI bezel version being the best of the two.

To be more precise, that is neither a Rolex nor a Submariner πŸ™ƒ
