I deal a fair bit in antiques and this sort of thing is rather common in that trade and at auction (as Mark alludes to in one post above about a certain auction house). One does what due diligence one can but as a buyer one generally feels there is a level of protection buying at auction and I always assumed the right thing would happen if something came to light regarding consignors and original owners and the law etc. Seems from my and Nick's experience this could be wishful thinking. I once unwittlingly bought a stolen item at auction and I was the one who ended up reuniting the item with the original owner (it is a small world like that of watches). I actually got refunded by my credit card company in the end not the auction house. The Police were involved and it seems this was part of a wider scheme and there were much bigger fish to fry than the consigner to auction. All left a very bad taste and view though.
