Easy choice if I were in your shoes...
- "I have zero use for a chronograph" : I don't say, YOU say it ! You already have a part of your answer...
- When I hear you qualify the 1815 AC, I hear only positive points : beautiful, useful, awesome mechanism of date setting, comfortable and there is no "but..." at the end of your sentence
- I totally share the point of view of sham1. Actually like shafran I had the same experience: I had the Datograph in Platinum that I also found "iconic and gorgeous" as per your words but due to the "hamburger syndrom" and weight it was really uncomfortable on my wrist (I don't say it is because of the watch, it might very well be my wrist but at the end both were not matching together) to such an extent that I was not giving it any wrist time and finally let it go. And because I am kind of stubborn and found that movement so "iconic and gorgeous" I gave it a chance again with a slightly lighter and thinner version with the 1815 chrono WG. I was really disappointed but had to admit that it felt the same problem and could not keep it for the same reason... So before pulling the trigger, think twice and make a real wrist test (long enough) for making sure that the Watch and your wrist are matching (unlike me). This might very well answer your question for good before you go any further...
Of course I am biaised due to my experience even if I LOVE the design of the Dato but if I now summarize :
Do you prefer to acquire an iconic and gorgeous but "useless" (for you) chronograph that it is known for not being comfortable on the wrist of many (check how it is on yours...) ?
or go for another one which is useful, also very nice looking (movement and dial side), and comfortable to wear thanks to its thinner case ?
Only YOU have the answer but it would be an easy choice if I were in your shoes... as I said in the title

If finally capable, I would buy both. Their styles are quite different and I am very sure you will enjoy both very much.
If really have to pick one, I will choose the datograph. It is just the beauty of the beauty. Having said, always get one you like most.

I too was swayed in the early days on what's iconic. So I ended up buying the Lange 1 and Dato, all iconic pieces. But I felt I missed out on pieces that I really liked too.
I had the original dato.
i did nit like the top heaviness of it and traded for a grand Lange 1 moonphase. I love the watch. Go with what your hear likes.

Both are good choices and can't go wrong with either.
Buy whatever speaks to you. It's definitely Dato for me though. The front and back bring big smiles on my face each time I see them.
