Interesting observation
I can only speak for myself and the community back then to a certain extent. Yes - I don't feel a lot of APs were as popular as other fine watches, but those in the know had an elevated sense of accomplishment and can pull it off with an equal sense of style and panache. I think to pull off either the 44/42mm offshores, requires a little more appreciation of more audacious pieces of jewelry.
It was always fun to go to collectors events and be the only one in the room
