Afternoon drives are probably a safer bet - and possibly a few miles rolled before trying anything committed. Any kind of summer compound turns into grease once temperatures hit a certain point.

I don't, or at least have not yet.
I keep the car garaged over winter and try to get it out every 2-3 weeks just to run it. I know guys that do change to snow tires and say it performs quite well, especially in the snow mode which really reduces throttle input.
