My pal Berge had a '70 GTX 440 four-barrel . . .

. . . with the pop-up hood and a 4-speed.  We're on our way to the Riverside 400, early 1973.  The transition from the 605 to the 91 had just been completed - asphalt was thick and fresh.

We're tooling along ~ 80 mph.  (Remember, in those days tires were bias ply and wheels were 15".)

What do we run into on the transition?  A green '69 Charger R/T.

Berge pulls up alongside.  First thing I notice is it's a Hemi.  Next thing?  Driver's a blonde.  Wearing Raybans.

Berge looks over at her, she looks at him - dropping her Raybans.

They go for it.  Within seconds she pulled two car lengths ahead of us.  When Berge gave up the chase we were doing 120+.

And yeah, I was thrown back into my seat.  Couldn't have reached a C-note taped to the glove box.
