Dressing down is a fun thing to do.
I agree that something leather is the way to go.
Just the right color like a tan with black stitch so it's not too "fashion-watch" looking to where the strap becomes the main attraction.
And I personally would not consider a Nato for this beauty.

Matte black or grey works
That's how I've been wearing mine. It's dressed down a *bit* that way but it still doesn't look what I'd call casual. I suspect this might work with a taupe suede, which would be a bit further down, but I haven't tried it that way yet. ...

This won't be popular but I would definitely put that on an awesome bund strap.
A light brown, which would really contrast with the austere dial, could work.
Even alligator will not look formal.
