Very cool watch! Another "quintessential" model. At first they wanted the color of aluminum. But the problem was that they couldn't make the watch out of aluminum as aluminum can be less rigid and slightly soft - making that matte texture a little likely to fade a bit. So they had to make it in steel so it would have the rigidity and hardness to keep the matte texture. But then the steel version didn't have that white and bright look - so they had to plate it in various materials - I'm not a metallurgist expert but I was told this was necessary because the outermost material wouldn't stick very well to the steel. Thus the steel was plated with an intermediate element before being plated with the final element.
