Chopard

Winters are cruel in Sonvilier

So they tell us - that watch is the oldest that they have found with Louis Ulysse's signature AND Sonvilier marked. Don't forget that the Chopard family were established as component suppliers and did not sign their stuff for generations.

Along comes this upstart 24 year old who has the temerity to form his own company. He splashes some paint on the side of a farm building - writing  'L. U. C.' - et voila! a company is formed.

Nobody said anything about modern technology though smile  and those mountain passes to Sonvilier do get blocked in Winter - they huddled down and just made things the old way for a long time.  I guess in the beginning it was difficult to sell a watch unless it was signed by some great house in Geneva or Le Locle.....hey, nothing has changed much!
