Advanced Research Watches - Fad or Fantastic?

Dear Guys,

I have been following the Advanced Researc Watches for the past 3 years.  After reading Jerome's excellent post below, it seems to me that there might be several things going on.  It seemd at first that everyone in the watch industry  was being part of the silicon fad phase and the use of "new materials."  Also justifying it as trying to be "lubricant free."   Now, we are seeing adaptations of 150 years desings, but with Patek still calling it s "Pulsomax " a Swiss levelr escapement.  Are they really rethinking "watch designs" and mechanical horolgy principles or are they adpting the design to fit a material, i.e. are a 16 tooth design and a wider pallet easier to make with silicon?  Certainly, the improved efficency resulting in a longer power reserve is intersting and appears to be a beneficial finding.  My ultimate question is this - 10 years from now will we look back and see these watches as a major turning point in mechanical watches or merely a clever way to fund ongoing research?  I'm too new to this to have along-term perspective.

Thanks, Rollin
