I recently purchased my first Patek (5712 1a), and love it. Now I'm looking at my next addition. I've boiled it down to either 5146g or 5396g. I like them both for different reasons--the 5146 is beautiful, sort of retro, has a power reserve and is a classic as far as I can tell. The 5396 has an austere, modern look which I find appealing. It also seems a little less common that the 5146 (I'm not sure that really matters, but it does have a bit of appeal to me). They're close enough in price to be a wash in that regard.
I would welcome any input, pro's and con's etc., from you'all. I'm sure there are a number of forum members that own or have owned both pieces. I appreciate your thoughts in advance.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I've been thinking about whether I should trade in my JLC Master Perpetual in wg and my G.O. Karree Perpetual in ss for a 5146G. I already have a 5712G so i'm not sure if it would feel like too much of an overlap. Thoughts??...

Had both. Never wore 5396, so it had to go. Looking back, I don't understand why 5396 appealed to me. This message has been edited by Rainer B. on 2009-06-24 07:05:17...

After much deliberation, and the insights provided by forum members, I've decided to go with the 5146g with the slate dial. It just seems to be softer, rounder, more classic and "approachable" than the 5396. Should have it next week. As you can imagine, I...
Classic 5146

About two weeks ago, I got my PP 5146 with cream dial and dark brown leather strap. After more than 1 year of searching and waiting, I got what I want. What makes it more classic is actually it's cream dial. Eye catcher, head turner, whatever you want to ...
