Cazalea’s Garden Gleaning
“Gleaning” means finding fresh fruit and veg from plants that are on public land or hanging over a fence onto public areas… my wife is an expert on gleaning, and so are some friends. I’m too embarrassed to do it with a clear conscience, and often feel like I am poaching.
Anyway, Here’s what a walk around our church’s property produced:
I cut the figs in half, put a chunk of chèvre in the center, and a few drops of balsamic vinegar. Served with Viognier and nuts, chocolate chips and golden raisins.
It was just as good as it looks!

Nice! My wife does the same around Santa Monica, and I experience similarly mixed feelings.
Sometime she even rings a stranger's doorbell and asks for permission to pick fruit that is not in the public domain. That usually works out for the landowner, as she (my wife) is very generous with the resulting pie, jam, etc.
