Rolex

Explain this to me….

Why do some fellow members think that Rolex will remove the dealership of an AD or boutique in case of in our eyes wrongdoing and/or listen to the public about dubious practices.

So I have also experienced what some of my fellow members have experienced regarding the purchase of a new steel Rolex.

As it so happened, I was in Shanghai and I stumbled in a Rolex boutique (at least that is what I think now – but all the signs were there) on a Rolex Daytona Ceramic black dial ….white light was shining on it …and I could hear the music …Hallelujah..Hallelujah…Hallelujah. I couldn’t believe it to this point ..there it was…in a showcase.

I asked the price to this fine gentleman who confirmed with his female colleague and it was RRP depended on exchange rate, so I thought…here we go. I reconfirmed the price was once more and they gave me the same figure. So, I asked, can I try it on? No sir, you first pay for it, then we will take it out from the showcase and then you can wear it…..Well, that was at least nice of them to provide the watch after I would have bought it and not to leave it in the showcase for other people to see.

They mentioned that it is Rolex policy to not take out the watches shown in the showcase…I sincerely had no problems not being able to try it on, as I understand it’s a legendary piece and nowhere to be found.

I mentioned give me a couple of minutes, and I will come back. I left and after 10 min or so, I returned. I asked the boutiques contact details and told them I would call them the next day for the watch. I sometimes play this game with myself, that if the watch is still there whenever I want it, it’s meant for me. Just as I was leaving, I reconfirmed the price again, as I want to avoid any misunderstanding due to language and that’s when it happened. All this time, I was talking to this chap (I believe his name tag mentioned 31015 ....talk about being a number) and he was asking information from a female colleague of his (I think her name was 31017) – granted, language barrier could be an issue so he just wanted to be sure again.

The female colleague then mentioned to him that I had to purchase another watch in order to buy the Daytona…the gentleman explained this to me and I nodded my head…then the gentleman apologized and said, oh no sorry, you have to buy 2 watches in order to be able to buy the Daytona. And I said…2 watches? Really? On top of that, I couldn’t even decide which 2 watches; the female colleague was kind enough to point out which Rolex I should be purchasing and mentioned that the 2nd could also be a Tudor, since they had a booth room next to the Rolex showroom.

I politely declined, said thank you and left the store.

I have seen more of these stories and people mentioning to reach out to Rolex as this would never be accepted by Rolex…which made me think..really? I thought, should I write an email to Rolex about my experience and see in their response if they would really care.

However, I couldn’t find an email address…I believe I have to do it ol skool… post a letter to Rolex to explain my experience…to be honest..would they really care? How many years have these stories been going on about other steel models and till date, I don’t think anything has been done about it. Has anyone come across an AD or boutique being stripped of their Rolex dealership because of selling above RRP or only bought in bulk buys with other watches?

Now, I would presume, my fellow members would see flaws in my story that I did not immediately buy it and why play that game of next day still there allowing the boutique to come up with this ‘buy 3 watches and get the 1 you also want’ scheme. Granted, but please note that I was just visiting the boutique with no prior intentions and therefore the Daytona came as a surprise to me; unfortunately, I am one of those persons with monetary restrictions and therefore I have to always carefully consider whether to purchase a watch or not …how legendary it may be.

Bringing me back to the subject, why would Rolex remove the dealership in such a case? Imho, I think Rolex is fine with this kind of practice, despite the good intentions of fellow members towards Rolex, and will not adjust it as they are a business and need to make money (supply and demand). As long as people keep on buying Rolex, whether RRP, above RRP and/or with 6 other Rolexes, it will continue…. I don’t see why Rolex would remove a dealership or change the policy. Good for them…

Therefore, I have decided to move along and give Rolex for now the ‘finger’.

Kind regards,

Sc16

Ps. I am still waiting for the pepsi and/or rootbeer ..so the ‘finger’ is until then..hahaha
