How many watches?
out of curiosity, how many time pieces do you have? I have 6 what I would consider somewhere on the luxury spectrum. Most of which are in the $3k range. My recent Glashütte and Patek purchases have brought the overall average up a bit.
I have the Rolex Milgauss and omega Railmaster on my radar screen, but then I am DONE! (I actually almost said that with a straight face) 
I imagine my 6 watches would classify me as a rookie in these parts

I think it's primarily about quality rather than quantity. Personally I own some 15 to 20 pieces, which sounds like a fair number, and they range from Rolex to Patek to Panerai, etc...
However, I almost never wear many of them, so for me this means that 15 to 20 is too many, and also that the average quality of my collection can be higher. On the other hand, the last three watches I bought are by far my favorite (some rare handcrafts fr...

I think that's a good approach, except that after acquiring the Omega and the Milgauss you want, you might not be able to stop for "several years" -- or it will likely kill the hobby if you do.
As you say, for as long as we're passionate about watches (or shaving, or anything else), it's just good to try to constantly improve ourselves -- and this is one nice hobby to have ;-)
