Horological Meandering

Icons of my lifetime....

When growing up in my late teens & early 20s, the 3 watches pictured above were symbolic of wealth, style & cool respectively. I always wanted a Santos, from first sight of it in stainless steel, I felt the design was faultless. It took me until my 30s to own one. I remember the feeling of confidence it gave me. I felt a couple of inches taller & strutted along the road like I owned it. Ridiculous really, it is after all just a material possession that won't comfort you in times of despair.
The Datejust reminds me of the late 80s where I spent a lot of time on golf courses in Portugal. The Datejust in gold was the go to watch for the resident golf pro at Penina & indeed most aspiring golf pros. Nicklaus, Palmer & Player were 3 outstanding sporting icons to latch your brand onto & Rolex benefitted hugely from these men. That said, I never had any desire to own one.
The Speedmaster Professional I always thought looked cool, although I far preferred the simplistic design & clarity of the Santos to the busy dial, numbers & sub dials of the Omega.
These 3 watches I always felt were in the achievable price bracket although I never expected to own more than one of them. My love of watches has grown hugely since my 20s. 3 decades on I'm obsessive about them. Of these 3, the Santos will always have a special place in my heart. Since buying a Speedmaster, I have to admit that it's become a real favourite. So many looks, from so many straps, it just never gets boring.
All brands are hugely successful but which one would you take of the 3?
