Horological Meandering

JedScratcher

Sitting in the ballroom at IGOTT2, bombarded with images of luscious dials and movements (examples of which are captured in your photos, a few of which I have re-posted below), with scholarly discourse about frequency and metallurgy and time wafting through the air as free for the taking as the little chocolate candies on each of the tables in the room smile, my mind reverted to what it used to do when I was but an undergraduate student in Austin oh so many years ago -- it drifted!  I began to jot down a few notes, a stream of consciousness, with the paper and pens the Encore hotel so graciously provided on the table in front of me.  Here's what came out:

Quality is real.  It is an observable core of unmistakable beauty, function and value; it is often hidden, however, beneath an ever-growing crust of mediocrity, even vulgarity. One may approach quality from infinite points of reference, but to uncover it requires vision, passion, courage, exquisite skill and at times a bit of luck.  One must dig and scrape away the obscuring layers that build up and hide (but never alter) the essence of quality that pulses within the core. Indeed, in order to persevere, one must silence the deafening ring of those who actually cheer for mediocrity to sidetrack the quest and end it for all of us.  As there exist infinite vantage points from which to embark upon the quest for quality, there exist infinite cross sections of that inner core of quality that may be exposed, and each shines with its own unique set of elements, each a beauty in and of itself. The path to quality is direct, but the end of the journey is ever changing.

If I were Thomas, I would label this a headscratcher.  Instead, I'll call it a "JedScratcher" and ask for your thoughts.

Best,

CaliforniaJed
