They still sell them and people are buying them. But on my wrist there were issues with both the base movements and the perpetual calendar module.
Hopefully, even if it's limited to you, which I am inclined to be highly doubtful of, after learning about your ordeal, at least some...
attention, however slight, concerning robustness, was looked into by IWC.
5000 movements
I've had great luck with my 5002 BP movement. My Miramar big BP stopped but was due for service anyway, which was handled quickly by the Texas service center. I'm sad to hear the perpetual module is not good. I was hoping to add one to my life eventually....

Mine is the updated, twin barrel caliber, and has run smoothly for three years. (Knock on wood...) ...
iPhone shot makes it look bigger on the wrist than it is.
7" + wrist seems to let me get away with up to 45mm diameter, assuming short, curved lugs.
Right! I just rounded the number to the nearest millimeter 😉
BTW, IWC is reducing the PPC size back to 42 mm this year.
A good call on IWC's part, I think!
Though it's been so long since I've seen the earlier 42mm model in the metal that I can't remember if the subdials felt cramped. Still, a much more wearable size...
