Hi all. My dad passed away many years ago and left me a Rolex 5508 (verified by Jeweler MN 5508, SN 763XXXin really great condition. In fact, it's been sitting in a safe for over 20 years, and I just received it two days ago. I've been looking on line at 5508s and they all differ from mine in one interesting way. The word "Submariner" is printed above the depth ratings. Every 5508 I've seen has it reversed. I remember my dad saying, "This is a special watch son. It's not like the other James Bond watches out there." Since I know absolutely nothing about these watches, and I intend to sell this one, I thought I'd ask here: is this something rare or special, or is this a standard 5508?
And I have more info on the watch. The box it was in was posted to Geneva for service by Rolex in 1981. I have no idea what was done, but this thing keeps crazy accurate time today, so maybe it was tuned? Upon its return it was put into my dad's safe and left there until two days ago. The body is in stellar condition, with no pitting and only the finest signs of wear. The glass has a few tiny surface scratches (I tried to really show those in this picture) and the band is apparently original.
